Food labels are the most important and most effective way of communicating health, safety and nutrition information directly to consumers along with basic product information. Food labels are the main source of information in terms of consumers' dietary habits, sensitivities and consumption preferences.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, whose main objective in food is to protect consumer health at the highest level, continues its efforts in line with the decisions taken at the 3rd Agricultural Forest Council to increase food literacy and to inform consumers correctly.
In this context, a draft regulation for accurate information was prepared in the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Labeling and Consumer Information, based on the highest level of protection of consumers and consumer sensitivities.
OPINION CAN BE MADE ON THE DRAFT REGULATION DURING ONE MONTH
The draft, which envisages an amendment to the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Labeling and Informing Consumers, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, is available on the website of the General Directorate of Food and Control (https://www.tarimorman.gov.tr/GKGM/Duyuru/447/Mevzuat-Taslagi-Tgk-Gida-Etiketleme-Ve-Tuketicileri-Bilgilendirme-Yonetmeliginde-Degisiklik-Yapilmasina-Dair-Yonetmelik) was opened for discussion.
Relevant ministries, universities, non-governmental organizations, consumer representatives, industry, etc. regarding the regulation change. all stakeholders will be able to express their opinions within one month.
The draft will be evaluated by the sub-committee formed after receiving ideas and suggestions from the Ministry of Health, other relevant ministries, universities, NGOs and the sector, and then it will be discussed in the National Food Codex Commission. The Regulation, which will be finalized in the commission, was signed by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. After Bekir Pakdemirli's approval, it will be published in the Official Gazette and enter into force.
IN FOOD LABELS ACCORDING TO THE DRAFT REGULATION;
Misleading images will not be used.
The name of the food and the ingredients (list of ingredients) will be written 2.5 times larger than the current regulation, depending on the size of the package.
The area where the brand is written on the largest surface of a package was determined as the "Basic Field of View". The name of the food will also be required to be written in the basic field of view.
Misleading images, names and expressions will not be used in foods that are similar to each other and may be confused with similar foods by consumers.
For similar foods that may be confused by consumers, the name of the food; Where the brand is mentioned on the label, it will be written in the same font size as the brand of the food, right next to or below the brand of the food.
On the label of a food that uses only flavoring instead of fruit or vegetables in its production, there will be no visuals related to flavoring. The name of the food is flavored “…. Flavored” and wherever the name of the food is mentioned, it will be placed at least 3 mm.
In similar foods that can be confused by consumers, using the name of a food that does not have the characteristics, "….taste", "...taste", ....arbitrary etc. expressions will not be used.
If the image of a food ingredient is on the label or in the product name, it should be placed wherever the image is or next to or below the product name in such a way that the amount of that ingredient is at least 3 mm.
For foods containing sweeteners, the words “Contains sweetener” or “With sweetener” shall be placed in the basic field of view with at least 3 mm next to or below the name of the food.
