Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, is considered an architectural marvel. The Bird's Nest, located south of Beijing Olympic Park, was one of the main competition grounds at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. The stadium, which was established on an area of 20,4 hectares, has a surface area of 258 thousand square meters. The stadium, with a capacity of 91 thousand spectators, will also host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
The Bird's Nest was co-designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierrede Meuron and Chinese architect Li Xinggang. It is stated that the design of the building was inspired by the nest and cradle where living things grow and reflects the hope of mankind for the future.
The stadium resembles a bird's nest made of tree branches with the shape of a net formed by the parts supporting each other. The gray steel mesh is covered with transparent films, while the interior features an earth-colored bowl-shaped platform. This design is also a unique combination of carving technique reflecting the traditional culture of China, red color symbolizing enthusiasm and a steel structure design based on advanced technology.
