Alsancak Bornova Street Becomes Pedestrians

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has started to work to revitalize Bornova Street in Alsancak and to provide comfortable pedestrian access. The pedestrianization project, where vehicles can enter the street only between 04.00:10.00 and XNUMX:XNUMX, is expected to please both citizens and shopkeepers. Stating that the project, which will add vitality to the region, will also facilitate the access of the elderly and disabled to the street, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Eser Atak said, "We will bring the people of İzmir together with a completely different street with modern landscaping, decorative lighting and natural stone flooring."

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues its arrangements for pedestrian transportation in order to reduce the effects of the global climate crisis and increase the quality of life of the citizens. Finally, the Metropolitan decided to pedestrianize Bornova Street (1469 Street) and started working on the historical axis. When the works are completed, Bornova Street will be open to vehicle traffic only between 04.00-10.00 for the unloading, loading and unloading works of tradesmen and citizens. In this way, pedestrian density will increase, especially on the street, which is heavily used by young people, and the trade, culture and tourism sector in the region will be revived. On the street, where the rainwater line and sewerage infrastructure works continue, İZSU will make an upper floor with pressed concrete and natural basalt-looking parquet so that the pavement and road level are at the same level. At the same time, decorative lighting poles with a height of 6 meters will take their place all along the street. The works will be completed within 4 months.

Opinions of local people and tradesmen were taken

Providing information about the project, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Eser Atak said, “Alsancak region is the heart of İzmir. It is an area in the city center where art, commerce and entertainment life are concentrated. Especially the young population comes to the Alsancak region intensively. The historical street we call 1469 Sokak or Bornova Sokak was previously open to vehicular traffic. With the analyzes we made, we determined that the pedestrian density on this street is much higher. We decided that a pedestrianization project is very meaningful and necessary for this street. We held a meeting with the residents and tradesmen living in the region. We started to work by taking their opinions and suggestions. First we made our barriers. Then, İZSU General Directorate renewed the infrastructure. Our Department of Science Affairs teams started their work. We aim to complete our project in approximately 400 months on the 6-meter-long, 4-meter-wide street.”

Both citizens and tradesmen will smile

Noting that the entire floor covering will be renewed, lighting elements and landscaping applications will be made within the scope of the works, Atak said: “When our project is completed, this street will become an accessible street for the elderly and the disabled. It will become a lively, attractive and living street for 24 hours. We think that the pedestrianization project will provide an additional income of 25-30 percent to the earnings of the commercial enterprises here. Analyzes made in pedestrianized areas around the world show this. We aim to complete the regulation quickly in a way that will least disturb both our citizens and tradesmen. When the project is finished, we will bring the people of İzmir together to a completely different street.”

When the project is completed, it will be open to vehicle traffic only between 04.00-10.00 for the unloading, loading and unloading works of street tradesmen and citizens.
