In Moscow, the capital of Russia, a system called Face Pay, which offers the opportunity to make payments with the face recognition method, was put into operation at all stations of the metro.

Moscow Deputy Mayor Maksim Liksutov, speaking to the Russian press on the subject, said, “We are activating Face Pay, the payment system with the face recognition method, by the order of the Mayor (Sergey Sobyanin).

“Moscow is the first city in the world where this system has been put into use on this scale,” said Liksutov, adding that the system is being used at more than 240 stations in the city. Liksutov stated that in order to be able to pay with this method, photos, transportation and bank card information must be entered into the system through the application called 'Metro Moskvi'.

According to Liksutov, this service will be available a few hours after registration in the app. However, the use of the system is on a voluntary basis. Those who wish will be able to continue to make payments with other methods in use.

User information will be encrypted. The cameras in the turnstiles work on biometric data, not personal information.
The system is expected to be used regularly by 10-15 percent of passengers over the next two to three years.
