China to Ban Projects with High Carbon Emissions

China has published guidance on its targets to reach the peak of carbon emissions by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. In the guide published jointly by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council, a roadmap was set for achieving the targets put forward by China last September to “peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060”. According to the guide, the rate of renewable energy consumption will be over 80 percent, and the unplanned implementation of projects with high energy consumption and carbon emissions is prohibited.

According to the guide, by 2025, a green, low-carbon and circular development-based economic system will be established in China, and energy use efficiency will be greatly improved in key sectors; By 2030, energy use efficiency in energy-critical sectors will be brought to internationally advanced standards, and a green, low-carbon, circular economic system and a clean, safe, efficient energy system will be comprehensively established by 2060.

Green agricultural policies will be supported

On the other hand, in the guide, which emphasized that the industrial structure would be improved, it was stated that, in addition to encouraging green agriculture, the peak of carbon emissions in sectors such as steel, non-ferrous metals, petrochemicals, construction materials, transportation and construction will be accelerated.

The guide also pointed out that China will accelerate the development of emerging strategic industries such as next-generation information technology, biotechnology, new materials, advanced equipment, new-powered vehicle and aerospace and marine equipment.

China is currently the country that emits the most carbon dioxide emissions in the world and also invests the most in renewable energy sources. According to data from China's National Energy Administration, the share of clean energy in China's energy consumption has increased from 19,1 percent to 24,3 percent in the last five years.
