Bursa Metropolitan Municipality's 'Safe School Road' project was deemed worthy of an award in the competition themed 'Sustainable Transportation, Safe and Healthy Mobility' organized by the Union of Municipalities of Turkey. Bursa's award was received from the Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality, Alinur Aktaş, and the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Vedat Bilgin.
The October Assembly Meeting of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey was held at the union's headquarters in Ankara. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Bilgin, Chairman of the Presidency Local Government Policy Board Şükrü Karatepe, Chief Ombudsman Şeref Malkoç, President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey Fatma Şahin and Bursa Metropolitan Mayor Alinur Aktaş, as well as the mayors and administrators of the member municipalities. After the assembly meeting, the municipalities that ranked in the competition with the theme of 'Sustainable Transportation, Safe and Healthy Mobility' organized by the Union of Municipalities of Turkey were given their awards. The 'Safe School Road' project, prepared by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, was awarded in the 'Safety in Urban Mobility Category'. Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş received the award from Vedat Bilgin, Minister of Labor and Social Security.
Safe School Path
The 'Safe School Road' project, which was deemed worthy of an award by the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, was prepared in cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality Smart Urban Planning Branch Directorate and the Urban Design Branch Directorate. For the project, which was prepared to ensure that children and young people go to and from their schools in a healthy and safe way, an area of approximately 2 thousand square meters, which includes 2 primary schools, 1 secondary schools and 500 high school in Osmangazi District Soğanlı Neighborhood, was chosen as the pilot area. Within the scope of the project, areas where children and young people feel insecure will be determined and improved with the participation of children and youth. Safe school routes will be created and urban furniture on the designated school routes will be designed for children and youth. The walking school bus application, the safety of pedestrian roads and bus stops in the project area, the application of loyalty cards in order to encourage transportation with bicycles and scooters to and from school, and rewarding children are also included in the project. It is also planned to apply bicycle and bicycle park incentives to schools and to establish a bicycle path signaling system at critical points.
Both security and mobility
While it is expected to support sustainable mobility and life with the project, it is aimed to contribute to the feeling of safety of children and their families. The project, which is expected to contribute positively to climate change with the reduction of carbon emissions, will contribute to the economy, while the participation of children and young people in the urban services of the municipality will be ensured.
