The 14th World Energy Congress and Fair (Energy is Future-EIF-2021), which was realized with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey, was held in Antalya between 13-15 October.

AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. became the main partner of the event that brought together the leading energy sector actors of 52 countries of the world, as well as the important representatives of the Turkish energy sector.

At the opening ceremony attended by Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez via teleconference, Aleksander Voronkov, Middle East and North Africa Director and Regional Vice President of Russian State Atomic Energy Agency Rosatom, also made a speech.

In his speech, Voronkov said, “The indicator of a successful energy system is to be balanced, and also to include various types of production, which will allow to reduce the volatility in the market and create conditions for the sustainable recovery of the economies of the countries in the post-Covid-19 period. The energy system, where nuclear energy, which is a stable and reliable production source, provides the main load, makes it possible to respond to this demand. However, nuclear power plants are not only a source of clean electrical energy, but also a major infrastructure project that forms the basis of a country's technological development. Akkuyu NPP, Turkey's first nuclear power plant, clearly demonstrates this. Thanks to the constant support and joint efforts of our Turkish colleagues, the project is gradually transforming into the world's largest nuclear construction site, and the power units of Akkuyu NPP will produce tens of billions of kilowatt-hours of reliable and clean electrical energy each year after commissioning. This will feed the Turkish economy and contribute to the achievement of Turkey's sustainable goals in the field of national development.

Representatives of Rosatom and AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. also participated in the work program of the congress. Aleksander Voronkov made a presentation titled “Energy Transformation in the World” at the panel organized within this scope, and gave information about the current challenges in the energy sector and the methods proposed by Rosatom based on low-carbon nuclear energy solutions to eliminate them. In his speech, Voronkov also talked about the Russian VVER 3+ generation technology and its references in the world, low-power reactor technologies, as well as the innovative products of Rosatom offered in the foreign market. Voronkov also gave information about the progress of the company's wind energy and hydrogen business.

In another session held within the scope of the panel, the issue of nuclear energy was discussed. The panel was moderated by the President of the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Council (TENMAK), Professor Dr. Abdulkadir Balikci made it. Other participants of the panel included World Nuclear Association (WNA) General Manager Sama Bilbao y Leon, Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK) Vice President İbrahim Halil Dere, EÜAŞ Project Management Specialist Ahmet Ege. Touching on the issues related to the localization of equipment and material production in line with the needs of the project, Sezemin said: “The Russian and Turkish sides make great efforts to increase the level of localization in the project. For this purpose, the key project participants, the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the main contractor AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş., TITAN-2 IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT A.Ş. joint venture and a large “Localization Working Group” consisting of representatives of the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) management was established. As a result of the activities of the working group, a production localization catalog has been prepared, which is constantly updated and contains 718 items as of today. The total localization potential of the project is USD 5.9 billion.”
