Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, who met with the earthquake victims in the first hours of Saturday work, said, “We had the same feelings as you. Believe me, it's neither less nor more. I can never forget the feelings we experienced. The earthquake of October 30 showed that the top priority of this city is to become a resilient city. That's why we map the seismicity of Izmir," he said.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer met with earthquake victims before the anniversary of the 30 October Izmir earthquake. Bayraklı Neptün Soyer, wife of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, President of Izmir Earthquake Victims Solidarity Association (İZDEDA) Haydar Özkan and his wife Selma Özkan, Turkish Retired NCOs Association, attended the meeting held in Manavkuyu. Bayraklı Branch President Kenan Öruk, İZDEDA members and Bayraklı earthquake victims in the region.
Listening to the troubles and problems experienced by the earthquake victims, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer said, “We had the same feelings as you. Believe me, it's neither less nor more. I can never forget the feelings we experienced. Unfortunately, we are a society that forgets quickly and we continue our lives as if these pains never happened. Together, we will not allow this," he said.
We do scientific research
Mayor Soyer stated that as the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, they carry out many studies to ensure that the sufferings are not forgotten and the necessary measures are taken:
“The October 30 earthquake showed us that the top priority of this city is to become a resilient city. In other words, people living in this city live in a sense of security. Being safe in the apartments they live in. We started a study that is the first in Turkey and has very few examples in the world. Within the scope of the works that will last 30 months, we are producing underground photographs of İzmir. We started this review with the participation of 10 universities and 84 academicians under the leadership of METU. With these studies, the tsunami and seismic movements of the city will be evaluated, the active faults will be determined, and the last time they were active will be measured. Until now, we did not have reliable data on this subject. We will reach very concrete and clear information about İzmir's seismicity. Thus, we will have the opportunity to answer more vital questions about how this city should be built in the next century, where it should be built, and what should be paid attention to while building it.”
Özkan: “We cannot thank you enough”
Stating that he never left the victims alone during and after the earthquake, İZDEDA President Haydar Özkan said, “You have always been with us. You have helped thousands of people to live in a solid building. We can't thank you enough," he said.
He was greeted with applause
İZDEDA President Haydar Özkan presented an Atatürk cap to İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer. Earthquake survivors also presented Neptune Soyer with a handcrafted needle-embroidered cheesecloth, shawl and bag. President Soyer, who was welcomed with great love, was sent off with the applause of the earthquake victims.
