A few months after the introduction of the Mercedes-EQ brand's luxury sedan, the EQS, the next model based on electric architecture, exclusive to electric vehicles, was introduced at IAA MOBILITY 2021. The sporty high-end sedan offers all the core functions of the EQS in a slightly more compact form. The new EQE, in the first place, has 292 HP (215 kW) power. EQU 350 (Energy consumption according to WLTP: 19,3-15,7 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) version. A performance version of around 500 kW is also planned for the new EQE. The new EQE will be produced for global markets at the Mercedes-Benz Plant in Bremen, while it will be produced for the Chinese domestic market at the German-Chinese joint venture BBAC in Beijing.

Compared to the EQS, the EQE has a more aerodynamic stance with a slightly shorter wheelbase, shorter front and rear overhangs and more recessed shoulders. Sensory Purity is manifested in smooth and smooth surfaces and seamless transitions. The overhangs and nose design are kept short, a sharp rear spoiler reinforces the rear's emphasis on dynamism. In line with the fenders, the 19- to 21-inch wheels, together with the muscular shoulder line, give the EQE an athletic character.

In terms of size (Length/width/height: 4946/1961/1512 millimeters), the EQE is similar to the CLS. Like the CLS, the new model has a fixed rear window and a tailgate. E.g; The interior dimensions, whether front shoulder room (Plus 27 mm) or interior length (Plus 80 mm), exceed the dimensions of today's E-Class (213 model series).

Exceptional interior design and enhanced ease of use

With the optional MBUX Hyperscreen, the instrument panel turns into a single large screen. This application determines the aesthetics of the entire cockpit and interior. High-resolution displays merge seamlessly under a single glass panel. The high-resolution graphics of MBUX content bring a unique visual feast.

The front passenger's 12,3-inch OLED screen provides the passenger with their own display and control area. The screen allows the passenger in Europe to watch dynamic content such as video, TV or internet while on the go. Mercedes-EQ uses intelligent, camera-based blocking logic at this point: If the camera detects that the driver is looking at the passenger's screen, it automatically dims the screen for certain content.

The air duct tape runs thinly across the entire width of the vehicle at the top. This architecture, together with the display architecture of MBUX Hyperscreen, forms the architecture of the cockpit. The ventilation grilles on the sides have a turbine design. The harmonious union between mechanical, digital and glass screen creates a unique visual feast and experience.

The new MBUX generation, recently introduced at EQS, also uses it in EQE. Adaptive software offers the user the opportunity to adapt the control and display concept, while numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions offer personalized recommendations. With the zero-layer design, the user does not need to navigate through submenus or give voice commands. The most important applications are always in the driver's view, situationally and contextually, freeing the EQE driver from additional handling steps.

Efficient driving system

The new EQE's first 292 hp (215 kW) EQU 350 and it is planned to go on sale with a second version of this vehicle. Different versions will follow this duo. All EQE versions have an electric powertrain (eATS) on the rear axle. The 4MATIC versions, which will be presented later, also have eATS on the front axle. The electromotors consist of continuously driven synchronous motors (PSM) in both examples. With the PSM, the rotor of the AC motor is equipped with permanent magnets and therefore does not need to be powered. This technique brings advantages such as high power density, high efficiency and high power constancy. The motor on the rear axle provides high power generation thanks to its six-phase design, each with three phases and two windings.

The EQE is equipped with a 10 kWh lithium-ion battery consisting of 90 modules. Innovative battery management software developed in-house allows over-the-air updates (OTA). This way, EQE's energy management stays current throughout its lifecycle.

An important step has been taken in terms of the sustainability of cell chemistry in the battery. The optimized active material consists of 8:1:1 ratio of nickel, cobalt and manganese. This lowers the cobalt content to less than 10 percent. The continuous optimization of recyclable production forms part of Mercedes-Benz's holistic battery strategy.

EQE makes single-pedal driving possible

EQE delivers impressive acceleration and high performance levels without loss of power. The system also includes an advanced thermal concept and energy recovery solution. In this solution, the high-voltage battery is charged by converting mechanical rotational motion into electrical energy during gliding or braking. The driver can adjust the deceleration intensity in three stages (D+, D, D-) as well as the glide function with the gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel. Apart from that, there is also a DAuto mode.

Deceleration intensity is adjusted with ECO Assist. In addition, the brake energy recovery system is applied for vehicles in the driving direction, for example, at traffic lights. The driver does not need to press the brake pedal for this. In other words, a single pedal drive is applied.

Based on many factors, intelligent electric navigation plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, and also dynamically responds, for example, to traffic jams or a change in driving style. In addition, the MBUX infotainment system visualizes whether the current battery capacity is sufficient to return to the starting point without recharging.

Enhanced sound experience with high noise and vibration comfort

As a traditionally built sedan with a tailgate, the EQE offers a high level of NVH comfort (Noise, Vibration, Rigidity). Electric drivetrain (eATS) magnets are placed inside the rotors, optimized for NVH (also known as "Sheet Cut"). In addition, each point of the eATS has a special foam mat as an NVH cover. A sandwich construction is used in the inverter cover. eATS is separated from the body by two layers with elastomeric bearings.

Highly effective spring/mass components provide sound insulation from the cross member under the windscreen to the trunk floor. Acoustic foams are used intensively in the body carrier marriage.

Still, driving in the EQE can become an acoustic experience. EQE with Burmester surround sound system; There are two soundscapes, “Silver Waves” and “Live Streaming”. “Silver Waves” is a sensual and clean sound. Aimed at electric vehicle enthusiasts, “Live Streaming” offers a crystalline, synthetic yet human warmth. These can be selected or turned off as the audio experience on the central display. The other sound theme can be activated by over-the-air update with “Roaring Blow”. Loud and extroverted, this sound experience is reminiscent of mighty machines.

Air suspension and rear axle steering as options

The suspension of the New EQE, which has four-link front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, is similar in design to the New S-Class. The EQE can also be optionally equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS+ adaptive damping system. With rear-axle steering (Optional), the EQE is as maneuverable as a compact car in the city. The rear axle steering angle reaches 10 degrees. With rear axle steering, the turning circle is reduced from 12,5 meters to 10,7 meters.

New vehicle functions can be activated via wireless technology (OTA). From the beginning of the sale; additional sound experience “Roaring Blow”, two special driving modes for young drivers and service personnel, mini games, accent mode as well as DIGITAL LIGHT personalization with projection function. In highlight mode, the vehicle shows itself and its equipment features. This is activated by the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant. In addition to the “Digital Rain” light animation, the DIGITAL LIGHT customization features other “take me home” animations such as “Brand World”. While OTA functions are available in the Mercedes me Store, new products will also be added to the product range in the future.

Safe charging on a wide charging network

With the new Mercedes me Charge Plug & Charge function, EQE can be easily charged at Plug & Charge charging points. Charging starts automatically when the charging cable is plugged in, no customer authentication is required. The vehicle and the charging station communicate via the charging cable.

Moreover, Mercedes me Charge customers continue to benefit from the integrated payment function with automatic payment. The customer chooses his preferred payment method once. Afterwards, each charging process is carried out automatically.

Mercedes me Charge is one of the largest charging networks worldwide. There are currently over 200.000 AC and DC charging points in Europe and over 31 in 530.000 countries. With its certificates of origin, Mercedes-Benz guarantees that the energy supplied for Mercedes me Charge charging comes from renewable energy sources.

Advanced passive and active security

The holistic safety principles remain valid at all times, especially regardless of the crash safety platform. Like all other Mercedes-Benz models, the EQE is equipped with a solid passenger cell, special deformation zones and modern safety systems with PRE-SAFE.

The all-electric architecture opens up new design possibilities for the safety concept. E.g; Positioning the battery under the body in a crash-safe area is just one of these possibilities. Also, since there is no engine, the behavior in a frontal collision can be modeled even better. The performance of the vehicle in different overhead situations; Apart from standard crash tests, it has also been tested and approved at the Vehicle Safety Technology Center (TFS).

The new generation of driver assistance systems includes numerous driver assistance functions. One of these; Additional micro-sleep alert of ATTENTION ASSIST (with MBUX Hyperscreen). A camera in the driver display analyzes the driver's eyelid movements. The help display in the driver display shows the driving assistance systems in a clear full-screen view.
