Masks, which have been in our lives for a long time, bring different health problems. Nasal congestion and post-nasal drip are among these problems. Reminding that this situation directly affects the sleep of the person, Yataş Sleep Board Member Ear Nose and Throat Specialist, Dr. Instructor Member Ayşe Sezim Şafak underlines that the rates of headache and waking up increase in people who cannot sleep uninterruptedly at night due to the problems that arise due to long-term use of masks.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it the use of masks, which is one of the most effective methods of preventing the transmission of the disease. Yataş Sleep Board Member Ear Nose and Throat Specialist, Dr. Instructor Member Ayşe Sezim Şafak explains the reason for this as follows: “The nasal tip support in the Turkish race is generally weak and our noses are downwards. After starting to wear the mask, the nasal congestion increased as the tip of the nose went down due to the weight of the mask. We have observed a 20 percent increase in the number of individuals who have difficulty breathing at night who apply to the hospital due to nasal congestion. On the other hand, the fact that individuals with allergic rhinitis may have allergic reactions to the tissue and chemical content in the mask due to the long-term mask set increased their complaints such as nasal congestion and postnasal drip. As a result of these two important factors, the quality of sleep decreased significantly compared to the pre-use mask. Headache and tiredness rates increased in individuals who could not sleep uninterruptedly at night.”

Dr. Instructor In order to overcome these problems, Şafak recommends wearing the mask higher than the tip of the nose, in a way that does not reduce the angle of the nose tip, and preferring wider and non-synthetic masks instead of very tight masks.
