The 'Ulugazi Oil Wrestling', which was held in memory of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the first years of the Republic, is being held for the first time in 83 years. On Sunday, September 19, 2021 (Today), approximately 8 wrestlers, 500 of them gold belted chief wrestlers, participate in the oil wrestling matches in Maltepe Orhangazi City Park.
At the event, where all Istanbulites are invited, approximately 64 wrestlers of 14 different sizes, 500 of which will be chief wrestlers, will take to the square. 8 chief wrestlers with golden arches; Ali Gürbüz, Recep Kara, İsmail Balaban, Orhan School, Mehmet Yeşil Yeşil, Fatih Atlı, Şaban Yılmaz and Osman Aynur will compete in Ulugazi Oil Wrestling.
WORKSHOPS WILL BE ESTABLISHED, CONVERSATIONS WILL BE MADE
Ulugazi Oil Wrestling will also take place in different activities. Workshops will be set up in the event area and conversations will be held. Başpehlivan Ahmet Taşçı will give the speech on the stage set up outside the wrestling area. Wrestling can be followed live on the giant screen from LED screens installed in the field. Valuable works such as the 220-year-old kispet will be exhibited in the special exhibition area. There will be cotton candy, paste, sherbet dispensers and food treats in the area. Activities such as local dances, kite, wind vane, games and races will be organized in children's and adult workshops. Prizes will be awarded to those who participate in the competitions. Those who come to the area will be able to print their photos with photo activation.

ABOUT ULUGAZI OIL Wrestling
Great Leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was very interested in sports and especially wrestling, followed the matches between Turkey and Italy wrestling teams on the radio at Dolmabahçe Palace on September 19, 1933. Getting excited while listening to the struggles, Atatürk decided to go to the Maxim Hall in Taksim, where the matches were held. The Turkish wrestling team gained the upper hand in the competitions Atatürk watched. The Turkish Wrestling Federation, which designated September 19 as a special day when Atatürk honored wrestling and wrestlers, said, “We want to hold competitions under the name of Ulugazi Wrestling on September 19 in all wrestling regions in order to celebrate the honorable day of our sport every year.” made an offer. This proposal was accepted by the Federation. Wrestling matches were held on September 19 every year. After the death of Gazi Mustafa Kemal, Ulugazi Wrestling was not held again.
