Speaking at the opening of the 90th Izmir International Fair and the 7th Izmir Business Days this year, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, drew attention to the dangers of the climate crisis and emphasized the importance of the EU's call for a “Green Agreement”. Soyer said, “It is time to take a step by thinking about our children and all the other beings with whom we share the earth. The economy of the future can only grow together with ecology. The Green Deal is the future of the economy," he said.
Organized as part of the Izmir International Fair, which will open its doors for the 90th time this year, Izmir Business Days has started. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor attended the opening of the 7th Izmir Business Days, which will last for two days with the theme of "Circular Economy and Green Reconciliation on the Axis of Trade and Logistics". Stating that the reason for the existence of the Izmir International Fair is to secure the future of the Turkish economy, the President Tunç Soyer“Izmir, the city of pioneers, has another duty to find solutions to global problems. And the biggest of these global problems, more dangerous than the pandemic, is the climate crisis. In recent years, scientists, thinkers and historians express that a new era has opened. We are stepping into an era where our species will determine both its own future and the fate of the earth. The climate crisis is at the center of this new era we live in. It's time to take a step by thinking about our children and all the other beings with whom we share the earth. This is where the 7th Izmir Business Days come into play.”
The climate crisis is real
Stating that the European Union took one of the biggest steps in its history with the Green Agreement announced in 2019, Soyer said, “It has adopted the goal of being the first and only climate neutral continent in the world by 2050. This resolution describes some of the radical changes we must make in all sectors, from transportation to agriculture. The Green Deal draws a framework where nothing is waste, the output of one sector feeds the other, and the economy is cyclical, just like ecosystems in nature. Humanity has come to the end of the period when it separated economy from ecology. The relationship between ecology and economy is more than just a sound analogy. The economy of the future can only grow together with ecology. The 7th International Izmir Business Days are both new for humanity; but I also think it is an important opportunity to reveal the concrete steps of this extremely ancient thought. Global trade has to change because of the climate crisis. And being a pioneer in this matter falls to the Izmir International Fair, the first international brand created by the Republic of Turkey. You ask why? Because Izmir is a port and trade city for thousands of years. It has experienced many disasters throughout its history. However, despite all these disasters, İzmir has managed to stand up again and remain one of the most important ports of the Aegean and Mediterranean. Among the reasons for this success are the harmony of our city with nature from its past to the present, and its development by preserving the basic resources that created it.” Saying that new economic paradigms in the world of climate crisis and pandemic will be discussed in the seventh of the International Izmir Business Days, Soyer said, “The climate crisis is real. The Green Deal is also the future of the economy,” he concluded.
Emphasis on unity from Minister Muş
Mehmet Muş, Minister of Commerce of the Republic of Turkey, said, “Disasters such as fire, hurricane and drought have increased in recent years and have become more threatening to human beings. In such a period where the fight against Covid-19 and climate change emphasizes sustainability in the world, the increase in natural disasters has revealed that it is vital that all stakeholders act in harmony in the fight against climate change.
Köşger: “We are the responsibility of future generations”
İzmir Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger said, “We need to decide what and how we will leave a legacy to future generations, before it's too late, and take responsibility for it. We know that the necessary awareness and sensitivity has increased in all segments of İzmir in recent years.”
