CHP Tekirdag Deputy Dr. İlhami Özcan Aygun, examining the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Report, revealed that the accident rate at level crossings has greatly increased in the last two years.
Stating that 2019 of 33 serious accidents on railways occurred at level crossings (12 percent) in 37, Aygun said, “Due to the Kovid2020 pandemic, the number of accidents has decreased due to the decrease in passenger train services in 19. However, the accident rate at level crossings has increased despite the pandemic. In 2020, 16 out of 9 serious rail accidents occurred at level crossings. In other words, 2020 percent of the accidents on the railway in 56 occurred at level crossings. In 2020, 21 of our citizens lost their lives,” he said.
Aygun requested the establishment of a Research Commission in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to prevent accidents at level crossings. PANDEMIC DELIVERY TRIALS DECREASED, BUT THE ACCIDENT RATE HAS NOT DECREASED
Emphasizing that the "Regulation on the Measures and Implementation Principles to be Taken at Railway Level Crossings", which was issued for the prevention of accidents, was not implemented, Aygun said, "It is seen that this regulation is not complied with in many level crossings."
Aygun noted that a Research Commission is needed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for the construction of under/over crossings at level crossings, the distance between level crossings, covering, lighting, drainage and markings and all aspects of control systems and for taking necessary measures.
Explaining that an effective control mechanism should be introduced in order to comply with the current regulations, Aygun said, “There is no new loss of life that causes great pain; It is essential to examine all deficiencies in level crossings and to take effective measures to prevent accidents.”

It is seen that many level crossings do not comply with this regulation. No new loss of life causing great suffering; We propose the establishment of an Investigation Commission in accordance with Articles 104 and 105 of our Bylaws in order to examine all deficiencies in level crossings and to determine effective measures to prevent accidents.”
