Having completed the training program for Akkuyu NPP operating personnel at the National University of Nuclear Research (MEPhI) in Russia, AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. experts trained the teachers working in vocational high schools in Mersin.
In this context, teachers attended classes and seminars held at the training center of Akkuyu NPP, which is under construction, for a week. The trainings in question were given by the qualified experts of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş., who graduated from the "Nuclear Power Plants: Design, Management and Engineering" department at NRNU MEPhI University. In line with this study, "Introduction to Nuclear Energy" course will be added to the curriculum of 2021 vocational high schools in Mersin as of the 2022-7 academic year.
Relevant trainings were organized in June 2020 by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of National Education and Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. and TITAN2 IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT ANONİM ŞİRKETİ, the main contractor of the Akkuyu NPP project, within the framework of the cooperation protocol in the field of vocational training signed.
AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. In addition to developing and publishing educational materials for the "Introduction to Nuclear Energy" course, within the scope of the protocol, it assumed the obligation to participate in the joint work of the parties to analyze the labor needs during the construction and installation works of the Akkuyu NPP project.
In the training given, AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. Electrical Unit Specialist Ahmet Yasin Öner, “Nuclear Energy and Its Role in the Modern World”; AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. While Radiation Safety Specialist Deniz Leblebici made presentations on “Atom, Radiation and Radioactivity”, Repair Preparation and Application Unit Specialist Okan Koç explained the application areas of radioactive isotopes; Turbine Workshop Specialist Ahmet Avcı gave information on the nuclear fuel cycle and Repair Management Specialist Atahan Kiseсik gave information on the working principles of nuclear power plants and nuclear safety.
Nurettin Ambaroğlu, Director of Atatürk Anatolian Vocational High School located in the Toroslar district of Mersin, said the following about the studies carried out within the scope of the education program: “Starting from this year, the 6th grade curriculum of both our school and 11 other technical schools will be included in the 'Introduction to Nuclear Energy' course. 2 academic hours per week and 4 hours will be added for Russian language education. We will teach our students how people use atomic energy by applying modern technologies. In the future, we plan to give hands-on lessons for students at the NGS construction site. We expect around 700 students from various educational institutions and specialties to attend this course in the near future. In the high school I represent, lessons will be given to future architects, concrete workers and mold masters. In the future, we plan to expand the courses to include 12th, 9th and 10th grade students. Our long-term goal is to train specialists in vocational high schools for the needs of the nuclear industry. Our teachers are also very interested in this subject, especially during the training, they have the opportunity to get all the necessary information from qualified experts.”
Latif Uzun, who works as a physics teacher at the same high school, said the following on the subject: “In the future, we will have to explain atomic energy to our students. That's why this training has been very effective and incredibly useful for us teachers. Of course, we would like to visit the Akkuyu NPP site and see for ourselves how the facility was built, in order to help us better understand the working principles of the NPP. AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. Electrical Workshop Specialist Ahmet Yasin Öner said in his statement, “This is a great opportunity for us to transfer the knowledge we have gained to Turkish youth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Energy and our company for their trust in us. We tried to explain the modules of the training course to our high school teachers as much as possible and to answer all their questions. We had the chance to transfer the knowledge we gained from the trainings we received in Russia to the teachers. This has been an incredibly valuable experience for us. I hope that thanks to these seminars, the teachers have a better grasp of the content of the course and they have received detailed information about Akkuyu NPP.

While trying to present the subject in an understandable way, we also tried to answer the questions that I think will arise most frequently among students in detail.

Within the framework of the said protocol, AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. A textbook for the “Introduction to Nuclear Energy” course was prepared with the support of experts from the Ministry of National Education and the teachers of the specialized departments of the universities of the Republic of Turkey. The academic course, which was approved by the TR Ministry of National Education Board of Education and Discipline, has been included in the curriculum of seven vocational high schools in Mersin as of the 2021-2022 academic year.
