Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality is modernizing the urban traffic in Kocaeli with the identity of “Innovation in Transportation” with human-oriented, environmentally friendly and sustainable technological investments. Modern applications such as signaling, guardrail construction, horizontal and vertical marking application, information screens, smart traffic signs, radar speed sensors are implemented within the scope of traffic safety equipment improvement efforts.
WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF SAFE SYSTEM APPROACH
The Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to strengthen the existing sensitivity to comply with traffic rules, to create safer roads, safer marking and signaling systems, and safer and functional speed limits. Within the framework of the safe system approach of all services regarding traffic safety, comprehensive policies and measures are produced and implemented with the awareness of corporate responsibility. Efforts carried out to make Kocaeli an exemplary city in this field in our country are being continued effectively and continuously.
SAFER SYSTEMS FOR PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE
Pedestrian and cycling mobility leads to a healthier lifestyle, has positive results in terms of physical, mental and mental health, and helps to reduce the pressure on our country's health system in later ages. In parallel with this, the Metropolitan Municipality is putting into use systems that will make people living in Kocaeli feel safe while walking or cycling.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
Increasing traffic safety also supports environmental sustainability. Preferring mobility as pedestrian and cyclist contributes to reducing emissions, reducing noise levels and improving air quality. In this context, the Metropolitan Municipality strives to minimize the city's impact from vehicle emissions, thanks to signaling systems designed in accordance with traffic safety principles.
FULLY ADAPTIVE INTERCHANGE PROJECT
Within the scope of traffic safety, the Metropolitan Municipality provided the establishment of a dynamic intersection control system based on vehicle density at our 2 signalized intersections on the Seka Tunnel. In this way, the density values collected on image-based basis from the directions connected to the intersections were evaluated by dynamic intersection management algorithms, and the intersection was managed adaptively in the light of instantaneous density data. In this way, the performance of the intersections increased by 18 percent on average, 1,7 tons of fuel was saved on a monthly basis, and 3,2 tons of less carbon emissions per month were achieved.
