Istinye University UAV Team is ready for Teknofest

Established under the roof of Istinye University's Quantum Dynamics Robotics and Mechatronics Club, the UAV Team passed the challenging conceptual design stage with 80 points and qualified to participate in Teknofest, which will take place this year. Speaking about the success of the UAV Team, ISU Mechanical Engineering Department Head Dr. Şenol Pişkin said, “Our team has achieved a very important level of experience by performing all the stages such as design, analysis, production and testing, which are the basic steps of engineering, and they have shown that they can carry out works on an international scale.”

Istinye University (ISU), which draws attention with its student clubs in addition to producing the knowledge of the age in many different disciplines, equips its students with practical knowledge as well as clubs and laboratories in addition to theoretical knowledge. ISU's Quantum Dynamics Robotics and Mechatronics Club is one of them. The UAV Team, which was established under the roof of the club, continues its activities rapidly. Having successfully produced the first prototype, Ata-Bürküt PT1, the team managed to fly its first aircraft in its first flight test, unbroken and in accordance with competition requirements, despite the difficulties it experienced. ISU UAV Team passed the difficult conceptual design stage with 80 points and qualified to participate in Teknofest, which will take place this year. The aim of the UAV Team is to successfully represent ISU and our country in international competitions that will also be held in the USA next year.

“Our UAV team achieves very successful results”

Giving information about the team work, Istinye University Mechanical Engineering Department Head Dr. Şenol Pişkin stated that all stages of engineering, such as design, analysis, production and testing, were carried out by the students in the team:

“Practicing is one of the most important parts of engineering education. This situation has become even more important today. Reducing the course load and preparing an environment where students can work actively has become an approach brought about by the modern university approach. In addition, it has been understood that interdisciplinary studies that are not restricted to a specific discipline are also very productive together with teamwork. In this context, student clubs working in fields such as UAV, robotics, biomedical, medical artificial intelligence are very active in our faculty. In particular, our UAV team achieved very successful results and provided additional motivation to other teams. The UAV Team, which was formed by students from different departments, performed all the stages such as design, analysis, production and testing, which are the basic steps of engineering, and they both gained a significant level of experience and showed that they can carry out works on an international scale.”

“We are ready for international representation”

Ege Kutlu, a 3rd year student at ISU Computer Engineering, stated that their team is ready to represent our country in international arenas and said:

“When I started this project, I knew at the beginning that we would face many challenges. But from the very beginning, I was very confident in what this project taught me. I think that learning organizational skills and engineering design process contributed a lot to me and all my teammates in this project. Using these skills, we started production. The fact that we got different results when we tried the theoretical things (flight dynamics, aerodynamic calculations, conceptual design) in practice and changed the design accordingly, actually defined the engineering design process. After the mechanical design and production of the UAV, all circuits were completed and all sub-systems were completed, the Ata-Bürküt PT1 was ready for flight. With great enthusiasm, we had a successful and unbroken flight on our first flight at Hezarfen Airport with our team. Receiving this success in this first UAV we made, encouraged us even more. This year, we are preparing for Teknofest as a team. Thanks to this success, we have turned our eyes to SUAS-like competitions to be held in the USA. We are ready to represent our country and our university.”
