It is aimed to reduce risks with the high-speed train earthquake early warning system to be developed within the scope of the project carried out by the Department of Civil Engineering of Gebze Technical University (GTU) in cooperation with the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

GTU Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. Abdullah Can Zülfikar stated that the works within the scope of the project supported by AFAD started in 2019.

Zülfikar stated that the project is planned to be completed in 2 years, but they suspended some work due to the Kovid-19 outbreak, and stated that they aim to complete the project in September 5 with a team of 2022 people.

Stating that they are trying to develop an early warning system for high-speed train lines in line with the project and that they will use AFAD's seismic network in the project, Zülfikar said that in addition to AFAD's seismic network, more intense seismic devices will be needed along the train lines.

“Turkey Has Developed Much in Disaster Response”

Emphasizing that they have been studying recent earthquakes in the Kocaeli region, Zülfikar said:

“There are 4,5 earthquakes 6 and above. Using the records obtained from these earthquakes, we are in a position to detect the arrival of the p wave in the first 3 seconds and transmit it to the relevant places. There are many active fault lines in our country in terms of seismicity. Some train lines also pass over these fault lines. In the event of a possible earthquake, we need to inform the high-speed trains because, according to this ground movement, the high-speed train must either reduce its speed or stop at a certain distance. Abroad, especially in Japan, this is a system that has been used on trains since the 1960s. Later it was applied in Italy and America, Taiwan, China. We had to do this too. We met with AFAD officials, prepared our project and it was accepted. According to the decision taken in a project made in Sendai in 2015, these early warning systems are required to be established for the countries participating in the Sendai program by 2030. Turkey has improved a lot in responding to disasters, but what is said in Sendai now is not to respond to disasters, but to reduce the risk before disaster strikes. One of the ways to reduce risk is early warning systems.”

Explaining that the system is planned to work over AFAD and that AFAD is authorized for early warning systems, Zülfikar said, “Data will be delivered instantly, in milliseconds. In many earthquakes, let's not just say high-speed train, derailment on other train lines is a very common case. These systems need to be developed to prevent them.” said.

“The Train Has To Be Stopped And The Risk Has To Be Reduced”

Assoc. Dr. Emphasizing that they are currently in the algorithm development phase and that a typical low-cost accelerometer device will be used during the establishment of the system, Zülfikar said:

“These devices need to be used extensively. Accelerometer devices should be used more intensively on the lines where fault lines pass. Maybe it will be used for every kilometer, but it can be used every 5 kilometers in places that are far from the benefit. These will also need to be positioned according to the speed of the earthquake wave. We are currently only talking about high-speed train lines, but this device is something that can be used not only on these lines, but also in critical facilities. Previously, İGDAŞ company had placed these devices in all its networks. Currently, IGDAS has over 800 such devices in Istanbul. This world exists in Tokyo as far as I know. You have such a large accelerometer network Tokyo gas. Then it is used in Istanbul, which I know. You need to install such inexpensive accelerometer networks in critical facilities so that automatic shutdowns must be made before the devastating wave of the earthquake arrives, or the speed must be reduced, the train stopped and the risk reduced, as in high-speed train lines.”
