IMM President Ekrem İmamoğluIt started with the opening speech of Speaking at the workshop, which was convened to create the policies and strategies of the sports vision, İmamoğlu said, “We expect everyone here today to support the activities we will organize especially for our children and youth, and to offer us new ideas. The crazy project for me is that there is no child in Istanbul who does not do sports. I can say very clearly that one of the factors that will determine the future of our country will be the rate of our children doing sports.” Sharing that he is happy to include 'Women and Sports' among the workshop themes, İmamoğlu reminded the discrimination faced by Şanlıurfa little handball player Merve Akpınar and said, “It is not our place to say 'we are with you, we are behind you, we support'. We know that if women want and focus, they will do the best in sports, without the need for men.”

On the second day of the workshop organized by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) to create the Istanbul City Sports Master Plan, which will cover a 30-year period in Istanbul, Dr. It is held at the Architect Kadir Topbaş Performance and Art Center. The workshop, in which the progress of investments and services to be made in the field of sports was discussed within a certain program, was held by the President of IMM. Ekrem İmamoğluIt started with the opening speech of Academicians, representatives of non-governmental organizations, experts, who are the stakeholders of the subject; IMM Deputy Secretary General Murat Yazıcı, SPOR İSTANBUL General Manager İ. Representatives of sports clubs, especially Renay Onur and Istanbul BBSK Club President Fatih Keleş, attended.

"I BELIEVE THAT THE WORKSHOP WILL MAKE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION”

President İmamoğlu, who started his speech by presenting data about sports from the world and Turkey, said that people are deprived of the freedom of movement they find in the countryside and forests. He noted that sedentary life has reached enormous dimensions with the effect of technology, and cities have turned into places for crowds away from sports culture. Stating that the people of Istanbul, like the residents of every city in the world, miss and want green, clean air and movement, İmamoğlu stated that they started to carry out projects to carry the Life Valley projects, which he realized during his mayoralty period, to 15 different regions of Istanbul. Saying “Our aim is to attract our people to nature, sports and an active life”, İmamoğlu expressed the benefit he hoped from the workshop, “To increase the quality of life in Istanbul. To create a city that embraces sports as a culture of life and embraces Olympic values.”

İMAMOĞLU: “İSTANBUL DOES NOT HAVE A SPORTS MASTER PLAN”

Noting that they attach great importance to benefiting from the knowledge and experience of the participants who contributed to the workshop, İmamoğlu said, “With what we will learn from you, we want to prepare and implement a long-term sports master plan for this magnificent city. Because, as in many fields, we do not have a master plan in the field of sports," he said. Emphasizing that social progress is possible with sports, İmamoğlu gave an example from his own life. Expressing that he was introduced to athletics thanks to his physical education teacher, İmamoğlu noted that thanks to the athletics branch he met at a young age, he still experiences the benefits of the programmed working habits and discipline gained by sports today.

INCREASES THE RATE OF CHILDREN DOING SPORTS

Stating that young people who work on a schedule, are self-confident, live in harmony with their bodies and abilities, socialize through sports and improve their grades, will carry Turkey to many different places, İmamoğlu said, “It was very important for us to evaluate the subject of sports and education in different dimensions in our workshop. We expect everyone present here to support the activities we will do especially for our children and young people, and to offer us new ideas. The crazy project for me is that there is no child in Istanbul who does not do sports. I can say very clearly that one of the factors that will determine the future of our country will be the rate of our children doing sports.”

"WOMEN DO THE BEST IF THEY WANT"

Expressing that he was happy to see Sports and Women in the workshop, which included 8 topics, like all the participants, İmamoğlu reminded what the little handball player from Şanlıurfa said, Merve Akpınar, and continued as follows:

“I witnessed what a friend of Merve went through when she was in primary school. Almost 40 years have passed. How painful. If we do not see women as one of the most important components in all of our work, we will make a big mistake… There is no limit to our success when we trust our young girls and carry the volleyball structure to different branches. My special request to the women here today is to be more active in this regard. As in every field, it is not difficult to foresee that the development will accelerate when the number of female managers in sports increases. Many international studies point to this simple but striking truth. Women who did sports in their youth are more successful not only in the field of sports, but also in different institutions, companies and the academic world. Sports improve their self-confidence and make it easier for them to break down social prejudices. It is up to you to save our young girls from a sedentary life and the pressure of different circles. You can change the fate of our country by telling the wider masses what our daughter Merve has experienced, and the experiences of countless women in our country on the sports fields, and by overcoming the difficulties together. It is not our place to tell you 'we are with you, we are behind you, we support you'. We know that if women want and focus, they will do the best in sports, without the need for men.”
