It has been revealed that not a single plane has landed at Balıkesir Central Airport, which was built with the hope of 1 million passengers a year, since it was put into service for 18 months.

The government decided to build an airport in Balıkesir, which has a population of 2016 million 1 thousand in 187. For the airport, whose number of passengers is targeted at 1 million and the project amount is determined as 30 million TL, the expenditure made until the end of 2019 has exceeded twice the project cost and reached 76 million 521 thousand TL.

Not a Single Plane, Not a Single Passenger Arrived at Balıkesir Airport for 18 Months

A staff team of 99 people has been formed to work at the airport, from technical experts to security. The new airport was officially opened on February 10, 2020. However, not a single plane landed at the airport either on the day it opened or in the following days. A full staff of passengers and 99 personnel waiting for the plane every day have not seen a single plane or a single passenger in the area for the past 18 months.

CHP Balıkesir Deputy Şahin Asks Why No Plane Arrived in Balıkesir

CHP Balıkesir Deputy Fikret Şahin asked the Minister of Transport, Adil Karaismailoğlu, why there was no plane to Balıkesir. “Although the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced that the construction of the Balıkesir central airport terminal building will be completed and it will be able to serve all kinds of flights as of February 10, 2020, not even a plane has landed at Balıkesir Central Airport in the eighteen months that have passed. The airport, which has spent 76 million 521 thousand liras and has 99 personnel, is waiting idle and getting old day by day. In order not to be a wasted investment, flights to Balıkesir Central Airport should definitely be arranged and the airport should be operated. On behalf of the people of Balıkesir, I invite the deputies and officials of the government to show the necessary sensitivity on this issue.”
