Adenoid can cause hearing loss and ear discharge in children.

Medicana Sivas Hospital Ear Nose and Throat Specialist Emel Peru Yücel stated that if children have nasal congestion, sleeping with their mouth open, snoring, frequent upper respiratory infections, it may be a sign of adenoid, and that adenoid can cause hearing loss and ear discharge.

The adenoid, which is a cluster of lymph tissue in the area called the nasal cavity behind the nose, forms a protective lymph ring together with the tonsils and the root of the tongue. While adenoid, which is common in children, causes children to get sick frequently, if it is not treated, it can lead to hearing loss.

Medicana Sivas Hospital Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Emel Peru Yücel stated that adenoid and tonsil diseases are common health problems in the society and said, “Adenoids is especially common in children. Of course, not every child has adenoid complaints, of course, the adenoids may be larger depending on bacteria, infections, nose, respiratory system related anomies. There are complaints of nasal congestion, sleeping with an open mouth, snoring, frequent upper respiratory infections in children with adenoids. Their nutrition is disrupted because they have frequent infections. Ear infections happen. Hearing loss occurs. There is ear discharge. We do a physical examination of the adenoid. We do a nose exam. We look at the nose with endoscopes. We evaluate it by performing a hearing test to see if there is a hearing problem with it. Not all adenoids are operated. It is necessary to decide on the operation. If the nasal congestion is too much, the golden rule is adenoid surgery. But if there is less nasal congestion, if there is no complaint of ear infections, we follow the patient by giving medical treatments and calling them for follow-ups.

“Not all snoring is caused by adenoids”

Expressing that not all snoring is caused by adenoids, Yücel said, “Snoring should be evaluated according to the age group. We think that in childhood, there is more adenoid. However, in the adult age group, nasal cartilage curvatures and nasal flesh sizes may cause this. It can also cause soft palate problems. In children, not only the adenoids, but also the size of the tonsils can cause snoring, respiratory arrest at night, and sleep disorders. It should be evaluated according to age group and physical examination control. A complete ear, nose and throat examination is required. We evaluate the problem almost accordingly,” he said.
