GREENTECH FESTIVAL 2021, held in Berlin, focused on innovative technologies for a sustainable and climate-friendly lifestyle. Audi, one of the founding partners of the event, talked about its struggle against climate change in many areas from its products to process management, materials to technology, and its digitalization efforts to promote sustainability.

At the festival, visitors learned about how Audi promotes renewable energy sources, how its resource-friendly approach to plastic works, and the importance of artificial intelligence in the supply chain for its sustainability strategy.
GREENTECH FESTIVAL, which was brought to life in 1 by former Formula 2018 World Champion Nico Rosberg and two engineers and entrepreneurs Marco Voigt and Sven Krüger, was organized as a hybrid this year. GREENTECH FESTIVAL 2021, held live at Kraftwerk Berlin, can also be visited online.

In the opening speech of the festival, in which Audi is one of the founding partners, Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board of Directors responsible for Technical Development of Audi, talked about the brand's efforts to expand renewable energy sources. Hoffman also gave information about initiatives and projects related to increasing sustainability and combating climate change.

Henrik Wenders, Head of Brand in Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG, said that the Greentech Festival 2021 is an extraordinary opportunity to present innovative technologies and concepts in action to increase sustainability and combat climate change.

To be a carbon neutral mobility provider at Audi

Acting that electric cars will be completely carbon neutral only if they are charged with green power, Audi is working to make this possible for all electric cars. Supporting the expansion of renewable energy sources in Europe, the brand, together with several partners from the energy industry, plans to build new wind and solar farms that will generate a total of approximately 2025 terawatt hours of additional green energy by 250, equivalent to the capacity of more than 5 wind turbines in Europe.

The ultimate goal is to supply the same amount of green power to the grid as all electric Audi cars on the road should use on average. In this way, Audi aims to be a carbon neutral mobility provider.

A breath of fresh air: mixed plastics in automotive are recycled

One of the works that Audi exhibited at the festival was the project it collaborated with the “Industrial Resource Strategies” think tank at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The pilot project involves the chemical recycling of plastics used in automotive manufacturing. When the project is completed, it will be demonstrated that chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste is both technically and financially feasible. This will allow recycled plastic waste to be converted into pyrolysis oil and replace petroleum as the raw material used in the manufacture of high-quality plastic components such as fuel tanks, airbag covers or radiator grilles in Audi models.

URBANFILTER: microplastics are filtered where they are formed

The URBANFILTER project of the Audi Environment Foundation, which is involved in various projects to protect water bodies, also took part in the festival. The project, implemented in collaboration with the Technical University of Berlin, has developed sediment filters optimized for urban runoff that capture microplastics before they run off with rainwater before they run into sewers and waterways.

Joint efforts for clean waters

The projects carried out by the Audi Environment Foundation, which also works to purify the rivers and oceans from plastic waste, together with the green start-ups everwave and CLEAR RIVERS, were also included in the festival. Everwave caught just about 3 kilograms of plastic from the Danube for ten days in April alone, during the river cleanup run by the Audi Environmental Foundation and cosmetics manufacturer BABOR. Audi Environment Foundation, with its non-profit partner CLEAR RIVERS, also installs garbage traps to prevent plastic waste from entering the sea. He then builds these into floating pontoons, some covered with vegetation and some used as public recreation areas.
