Bosphorus Will Get Rid of 70 Thousand Tons of Mud Annually

İBB is implementing an important environmental investment for the Bosphorus. At the Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, the wastewater of 2.4 million people will be treated with biological methods. In this way, the Bosphorus will get rid of 70 thousand tons of mud annually. The facility, which was built with the latest technologies, will also produce electrical energy.

İSKİ, one of the subsidiaries of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, is implementing a giant environmental investment for the Bosphorus. Work continues at the Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, which will treat the wastewater of approximately 2.4 million residents of Istanbul with biological methods. Currently, only the wastewater sent to the Bosphorus through pre-treatment will go through a much more advanced treatment process. In this way, the Bosphorus will be rid of 70 thousand tons of mud per year.

The capacity of the facility, which can treat 600 thousand cubic meters of wastewater per day, can be increased up to 1.3 million cubic meters if needed. In this respect, the facility, which is one of the largest biological treatment facilities in the city, will be able to treat 6/1 of the city's total wastewater.

ELECTRICITY WILL ALSO BE PRODUCED IN THE FACILITY

At Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, a new technology that has just begun to be implemented in the world is being implemented. Efficiency will increase to a greater extent thanks to the “egg-section sludge digesters” to be applied in this facility for the first time in Turkey. İSKİ General Manager Raif Mermutlu stated that the methane gas produced during the decomposition of the sludge will be converted into electrical energy and that the facility can produce 60 percent of its own electricity needs. In this way, it is aimed to achieve an energy saving of 23 million TL per year.

COLORING TO SUIT THE SILHOUETTE

With the external appearance of Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, a first in Turkey will take place. With an artistic work, 6 tanks will have both an aesthetic and environmentalist look.

The construction of Baltalimanı Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was implemented with a total cost of 430 million liras, is planned to be put into service at the beginning of next year.
