Stating that Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder can occur while the baby is in the mother's womb or it can develop hereditary, psychologist Nehir Kadooğlu from VM Medical Park Ankara Hospital said, “These children who have difficulty in maintaining their attention, listening to others and making frequent mistakes are supported and their self-confidence is increased so that their education life is not affected must,” he said.

Is your child constantly distracted? Too active and impatient? Does his teacher complain that he constantly stands up, can't wait for the end of the word, or doesn't listen carefully? The symptoms in all these questions may be signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Stating that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can occur while the baby is still in the mother's womb, or it can develop inherited through the parents, psychologist Nehir Kadooğlu from VM Medical Park Ankara Hospital said, "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has an effect on the nervous system and brain development. Therefore, it is a neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral disorder. ADHD has 3 symptoms. The first is inattention, the second is hyperactivity or hyperactivity, and the third is impulsivity. We can define the diagnosis of ADHD in cases where one or more of these 3 symptoms persists.

May experience frequent injuries

Ps. Nehir Kadooğlu stated that children with ADHD should be supported in all environments and should be treated in a way that helps their treatment, as it is possible for them to have problems or have difficulties in most environments.

Stating that families have great responsibilities, Psk. Nehir Kadooglu said:

“The first step after being diagnosed with ADHD is psychoeducation. Here, information is given about raising the awareness of the family about the disease, what kind of treatment will be followed, and what kind of problems will be encountered in the absence of treatment. For the treatment of the child, first of all, the family should be very attentive and careful. Because children with ADHD will be more active and impulsive, they may have frequent injuries and sudden movements. At this point, the follow-up of the child becomes even more difficult for you, the parents. 'This kid doesn't stay still, I can't sit for two minutes because of chasing him, he constantly falls from somewhere and injures himself here and there. I can hear you say, 'I'm too tired, too. If you have a child with ADHD, it's normal to be tired, but remember you have a very special child. With the right information and the right way of upbringing, it is possible to comfort yourself and your child.”

Both medication and behavioral management should be used together

Stating that drug therapy and behavior management should be used together in the treatment of ADHD, Psk. Nehir Kadooğlu said, “Families generally use reinforcements, rewards and punishments to improve behavior. In this case, these are the methods that we should use frequently. All positive behaviors of the child in order to correct hyperactivity and impulsivity disorder should be rewarded. Thus, negative behaviors can be reduced and positive desired behaviors can be increased.

They should be supported to be successful in education.

Pointing out that the education life of children who have difficulty in focusing, sustaining their attention, listening to others and making frequent mistakes due to attention deficit disorder is greatly affected by this situation, Psk. For this reason, Nehir Kadooğlu said that they should be supported educationally and their self-confidence should be increased. Pointing out that the way to do this is to prioritize the subjects in which they are successful, Psk. Nehir Kadooğlu stated that this way, the child will be motivated to continue his education and a path from simple to difficult can be followed.

Find out if your child has ADHD with this test

Ps. Nehir Kadooğlu said that it is possible to understand whether a child has an ADHD problem with the answers to the questions below.

  • Does your child work hard but have low success in classes?
  • Doesn't your child sit in a fixed place for a long time, gets bored quickly and is constantly on the move, not standing still?
  • 'My child is very impatient, he can't wait at all. Are you saying 'neither a sequence, nor the end of a sentence'?
  • Does your child not listen to the other person and interrupts them all the time?
  • Does your child make a lot of eye contact and constantly miss details?
  • Does your child constantly lose personal belongings and relics?

If at least 3 of these are 'yes' to you, your child may have ADHD. That's why it's a good idea to consult an expert.

Distance education distanced families

Noting that distance education, which started with the pandemic period, has become a nightmare for homes, Psk. Nehir Kadooğlu said, “Everything that mothers wanted to keep their children away from became closer, and the things that they wanted them to get closer got further away. For example; listening to the lecture. “Parents who were able to breathe when they sent their children to school are now even more overwhelmed with the school coming home.”

Emphasizing that families should also look at this situation from the perspective of their children, Psk. Nehir Kadooğlu said, “Children who become more socialized, able to release their energies and become more disciplined in addition to education when they go to school now have to live all of these in one environment, at home. Listening to lectures, which children with the most active periods have already had difficulty, has now become even more difficult in the home environment.

The environment in which he listens to the lecture should not be distracting

Stating that their children, who have difficulty in concentrating and focusing, can get through this process in a healthier way, Psk said that families have a great responsibility. Nehir Kadooğlu listed his suggestions as follows:

“First of all, it is very likely that children will move away from the seriousness of school, decrease in their academic achievement, increase in addiction to technological devices (such as computers, phones, tablets), and decrease in time management and organizational skills in their daily lives. First of all, the environment in which a distance education child listens to the lesson should be arranged in such a way as to prevent distraction. Staying away from the objects and materials that may cause distraction around you as much as possible will prevent the distraction of your focus to some extent. Afterwards, before starting the lesson, it is important for the person to attend the lesson in a disciplined manner as when he/she went to the same school, in order to re-enter the student role. Daily routine should be continued. He should stay early in the morning and have his breakfast as in his old routine. Distance education does not rest while in bed! They cannot listen to a lecture while they have food, fruit, and snacks on their table while they are eating them. All of these cause the child to disconnect from the lesson, become distracted and withdrawn. Just like in school, the child should listen to the lesson when there is only water during the lesson, and at home, he should listen to the lesson when there is only water on his desk.”

Attention should be paid to the seating arrangement

Stating that another issue to be considered before starting the lesson is the changes to be made for the seating arrangement, suitable lighting and noise, Psk. Nehir Kadooğlu said, “The child should not be sitting by the window, away from the distracting viewpoint. Headphones can also be used for the possibility of disturbing sounds, and in this way, the child's education is made more efficient. Finally, with the child between lessons sohbet environment should be ventilated and needs should be met. TV should not be watched during recesses," he said.
