The Turkish automotive industry met at the 11th Aftermarket Conference this year. Making the opening speech of the conference, TAYSAD Chairman of the Board Albert Saydam stated that the traditional vehicle concept has changed with electric and hybrid vehicles and said, “With this change, the automotive supplier industry should develop its product range. We should focus on foreign investments and evaluate different business models, ”he said.

Ziya Özalp, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of OSS Association, on the other hand; He said that its effects on the automotive aftermarket in Turkey will be much more serious after 2035.

Baran Çelik, Chairman of the Board of OİB, said, “In electric and new generation vehicles, batteries and software play an important role in cost. Aftermarket industry will be affected by this transformation and action must be taken in this direction from now on ”.

The Aftermarket Conference was held for the 11th time this year in cooperation with the Vehicle Supply Industrialists Association (TAYSAD), the Automotive Aftermarket Products and Services Association (OSS), and the Automotive Industry Exporters Association (OIB). The conference, which hosted a meeting on a global scale and hosted a large number of experts from both domestic and abroad, discussed current practices, problems and opportunities in the sector. To the organization held as a video conference; representatives of manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and independent services also attended.

"The future has come before planned"

TAYSAD Chairman Albert Saydam, who made the opening speech of the conference, underlined that every element of daily life in the world has undergone a faster change than expected due to the effect of the epidemic, “There is no such thing as being prepared for change. The future that includes change has already arrived. "This is not a situation that we, as the automotive industry, are used to and enjoy". Emphasizing that the traditional vehicle concept has changed with electric and hybrid vehicles, Saydam said, “In the upcoming period, connected vehicles and driverless vehicles will enter our lives. With this rapid change, the automotive supplier industry must develop its product range. Studies should be carried out on the possibilities of expanding into new markets abroad by adding new products to the product range. We should focus on foreign investments. We should work towards options such as distribution network and warehouses. We have to evaluate different business models. "Our companies should strengthen their sales and marketing competencies by collaborating with upper or lower module manufacturers."

"We keep our expectation for 2021 at the level of 20 percent"

Ziya Özalp, Chairman of the Board of Directors of OSS, referring to the pandemic balance sheet of the automotive after-sales sector, said, “Manufacturers, one of the two main branches of our industry, have grown by TL-based in 2019, and distributors close to 2020 percent, compared to 30. These promising figures, emerging under such extraordinary conditions, allow us to keep 25 expectations at the level of 2021 percent on behalf of our industry, ”he said. Özalp stated that among the issues that are challenging the sector are the currency fluctuations, supply shortage, the global container crisis and cargo costs in Turkey.

"Aftermarket market is getting more and more important"

OİB Chairman Baran Çelik said that the automotive industry, which has been the export champion for 15 consecutive years, has made about one-fifth of Turkey's exports by itself. Stating that the chip crisis that emerged with the pandemic had a negative impact on the automotive industry, Baran Çelik also touched on the transformation in the automotive industry. Steel; “The added value in vehicles and components exported from Turkey is now at good levels. However, with the increase of electric and new generation vehicles, the added value will decrease rapidly. In these vehicles, the battery and software have an important place in the cost. In order to maintain added value, it becomes important to invest in battery technologies and vehicle software. In addition to these, digital instrument panels, camera and sensor technologies, charging equipment, power distribution systems, fuel cells, innovative materials and multimedia systems stand out as areas where investment should be made. The aftermarket sector will also be affected by this transformation and action must be taken in this direction from now on. Both the importance and the size of the aftermarket market are increasing in our country and in international markets. "

After the opening speeches, the conference continued with presentations with the participation of experts in their fields. In this context, LMC Automotive Global Sales Insights Director Jonathon Poskitt touched on "Automotive Sector Global Assessment", while DELOITTE Global Automotive Sector Leader Harald Proff made a presentation titled "Automotive Aftermarket Sector General Assessment". ROLAND BERGER's project manager, Dr. Robert Eirich and senior partner Alexander Brenner also touched on "Consolidation, Mergers and Acquisitions in the Automotive Aftermarket Sector - Impact of Covid 19 on the Aftermarket Market".
