Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Specialist Op.Dr.Bahadır Baykal gave important information on the subject. With the change of seasons, I wonder if rhinoplasty surgery can be performed in the summer months, does this create a drawback?

Of course it can be! In fact, the summer months can often be ideal for surgery and postoperative processes, as schools are on holiday and it is easier for working patients to take long-term leave. However, recovery processes after surgery performed in the summer months require extra attention.

What should be considered during the healing process after rhinoplasty operations performed in the summer months?

Protect your skin from the sun. After rhinoplasty surgery, the skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet rays. During the healing period, the skin is more reactive to the sun, due to changes in the tissue. For this reason, you should avoid prolonged sun exposure. You can of course continue your daily activities, if you have planned a sea holiday within the first 6 weeks after the surgery, you should protect your face and especially your nose from the sun with the help of a large hat and apply 50 factor sunscreen several times a day to your face and nose.

Do not wear sunglasses. Of course, it is very important that you want to protect your eyes from sunlight, but it is just as important in the recovery process of your nose after surgery. It is very critical to protect your eyes from the sun's rays with the help of a hat. Sunglasses put pressure on your nose, and this causes deformation in the healing process. We recommend that they wear sunglasses at least 4 weeks after surgery.

Keep your nose dry. Yes, it is very refreshing to dive into the sea or the pool on these hot summer days, but it is not right for our patients who have undergone rhinoplasty to dive under water for at least 4 weeks after the surgery and put their heads into the water. Do not go into the sea or pool without getting healing results from your doctor. Swimming in the early postoperative period can cause many damage to the nose from different angles. Chlorine and salt water can cause irritation and infection in the nasal canal, or an elbow strike to your face can cause negative consequences.

Avoid some sports activities. Team sports like beach volleyball are a great way to be social and stay in shape, but unfortunately they have a high risk of damaging the nose, so watching these sports outside until the healing process is complete will minimize the risk of a ball or elbow hitting your face.

Drink plenty of water. It is very important to meet the body's water need, especially in the summer months, in the postoperative recovery process. The amount of water you drink should be at least 2 liters. For the overall health of the body, do not dehydrate your body.

Choose your clothes carefully. The clothes you wear on your head after rhinoplasty surgery may hit your nose during your healing process. For this reason, you can eliminate the risks by wearing collared t-shirts, shirts with front buttons or zippered dresses instead of dresses.

Can you travel after rhinoplasty surgery?

Having a rhinoplasty surgery during the summer does not mean that you cannot go on vacation. You can get on the plane a few days after the operation or right after the incisions have healed. Bus, train and car trips will not be a problem in this sense. It is not a problem to drive a car, but at this point, it is very important that you do not take any painkillers that cause sleepiness.
If you are going to board the plane, a nasal spray recommended by your doctor will relieve you against pressure changes in the air. Salt water sprays will also help keep your nasal passages dry during the flight. It is one of the applications we recommend because it will reduce the pressure effect on the plane while chewing gum. You can apply one of these steps by asking your doctor.
