IMM has carried the struggle against mucilage, which it has been continuing throughout the city for 3 months, outside the city limits, upon the request of Mudanya Municipality. He sent a sea surface cleaning boat to Mudanya with special permission. The boat, which started its work on Monday, will complete its duty on Sunday and return to Istanbul. Emphasizing the leadership of IMM in cleaning the Marmara Sea, Mudanya Mayor Hayri Türkyılmaz said, “We will produce more permanent solutions with a healthy planning in the coming days. On this occasion, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the President Ekrem İmamoğlu'Thank you,' he said. IMM continues to clean the 515-kilometer-long Istanbul coastline from both the sea and the land every day.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) carried its struggle against sea saliva (mucilage) spreading in the Sea of Marmara since March, beyond the city borders. It cooperated with Mudanya Municipality against sea saliva.
WORK PERIOD WILL EXPIRE SUNDAY
M. Aslan Değirmenci, General Manager of İSTAÇ AŞ, stated the following about the works carried out by IMM:
“Our first practice against mucilage outside the provincial borders of Istanbul was in Mudanya. Upon request from Mudanya Municipality, we shipped our sea surface cleaning boat. As it is known, these boats are forbidden by law to go 20 miles off the coast of Istanbul and to work there. For this reason, we obtained special permission from the port authority to send sea surface cleaning boats. Our sea surface cleaning boat, which set out on Sunday, started working on Monday. It will also work until next Sunday. It will fight against mucilage, which has become a source of intense complaints for Mudanya Municipality. Then he will return to Istanbul and continue his duty here. As IMM, we were in cooperation with the coastal municipalities in Marmara before the mucilage spread. After that, we will continue our cooperation. Because the permanent solution lies in considering and planning the Marmara Region in a holistic way in every aspect. "

Mudanya Mayor Hayri Türkyılmaz also spoke about the works carried out in his district as follows:
“Our teams are working right now. I personally participate in these activities. However, this is a temporary solution. We need permanent solutions. The permanent solution is for all municipalities that have a coast to the Sea of Marmara, as well as the government, to gather around a common table and work together. Because there are parts of this issue that concern the government. We made a good start under the leadership of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. FIGHTING FOR THREE MONTHS
IMM has been struggling with sea saliva for the last 3 months. ISTAÇ AŞ continues to work with sea surface cleaning boats (DYTT) against sea saliva seen as white, light brown and foam. Studies are carried out in deep and wide fields. With the propellers of DYTTs, it is aimed to break down the saliva clumps and collect them.

General Manager of İSTAÇ AŞ Aslan stated that mucilage will disappear when the seasonal transition period is completed and the sea water reaches sufficient temperature. Aslan noted the following:
“With 11 DYTTs in Istanbul, we carry out our work without interruption at our beaches, bays and, when necessary, at our ports. We continue to fight not only against mucilage, which we call sea saliva, but against all kinds of sea surface pollution. In addition to these, our coastal crews respond to sea surface pollution from land with telescopic sticks and nets. Every day, we do cleaning work on the 515-kilometer-long coastline of Istanbul from land and sea. "

Sea saliva is a thick, sticky substance produced by almost all plants and some microorganisms. Sea saliva is a nightmare for fishermen in particular. Sea saliva clinging to fishing nets makes hunting difficult. Cacti, other succulents, and flax seeds are rich sources of sea saliva.
