Near East University Hospital Pediatrics Department Specialist Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit warned against health problems children may experience during the summer months. Stating that in this period when the pool and sea are used frequently, health problems such as sunburn, diarrhea, nosebleeds and rash can be seen in children, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Cerit listed the precautions to be taken.

With the increase in the time children spend outside in the hot summer months, sunstroke, burns and rash are much more common. At the same time, parents need to be careful about the danger of drowning when using the sea and pools. Near East University Hospital Pediatrics Department Specialist Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit gave information about health problems that can be seen more frequently in children during the summer months. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit said, “There may be traumas due to falling or hitting while running and playing. Diarrhea, vomiting attacks, insect, fly bites, bee, snake and scorpion stings are common conditions in children during the summer months. Spending time outside is a common activity for spring breaks or summer vacations. However, it is important not to forget to provide protection against sun rays. Since children are more sensitive than adults, they especially need to be protected from the sun's rays.

Repeated sunburns can cause skin cancer!

Sunburns, one of the most common conditions of the summer months, cause redness of the skin, increase in temperature and pain, as in other burns. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit says that in severe cases, conditions such as blistering, fever, chills, and headache can also be seen. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Emphasizing that even keeping children under an umbrella or in the shade is not enough to protect them from the sun's rays from time to time, Zeynep Cerit said, “Ultraviolet rays adversely affect the skin of babies under one year old. It is known that recurrent sunburns can cause skin cancer in the future. The best treatment for sunburn is protection.”

Children's sunscreens should have at least factor thirty.

Stating that protective creams should be used not only for protection from the sun, but also constantly, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit stated that cream should be applied to babies even when walking outside in hot weather. Stating that the sun's rays reflect negatively on children and babies with sensitive skin even in the shade, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Cerit emphasized that sunscreens should have a protection factor of at least thirty and that the creams used should not contain additives. Recommending that the sunscreen be renewed every thirty minutes to be effective, Assist. Assoc. Dr. “If a baby gets a sunburn, apply a cold compress to the affected area,” Cerit says. Be careful not to contact the ice directly with the skin. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Cerit also warned about using sunscreen: “Before applying, test the sunscreen on a small area on your child's back for an allergic reaction. Avoid applying it to the eyelids, apply the cream carefully around the eyes. Make sure you apply enough sunscreen. Apply sunscreen every hour or repeat after swimming or sweating. If your child has sunburns that result in redness, pain or fever, be sure to consult your pediatrician.”

Recommending the use of glasses, hats, umbrellas and thin cotton clothing in summer, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit continued: “Carry your baby under the shade of a tree, umbrella or stroller. Use brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. Wear light, cotton clothing that covers arms and legs.” Stating that children should not be completely deprived of the sun, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Cerit stated that vitamin D is an effective preservative in many diseases and that children should be exposed to direct sunlight for at least 15-20 minutes before using sunscreens.

Stating that the first and best defense method against exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays is to be protected from the sun, Asst. Associate Professor. Zeynep Cerit stated that it is necessary to stay in the shade as much as possible and not to go out in the sun, especially between eleven in the morning and four in the evening, when the sun's rays are steep.

Contaminated water swallowed in seas and pools can cause diarrhea.

Stating that one of the most common health problems in children, especially in summer, is diarrhea, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit stated that diarrhea is defined as more than three watery and excessive stools in 24 hours for babies and children older than three months. Stating that the definition of diarrhea in babies younger than three months is copious and watery stools that overflow from diapers more than six or seven times a day, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit continued: “In hot weather, diarrhea mostly affects children under the age of five. There are several reasons why diarrhea increases in children during the summer season. The most important of these is that viruses and bacteria that cause infection in hot weather can reproduce easily and quickly in foods. Another important factor causing diarrhea is the microbes contained in unhygienic drinking water. In addition, the contaminated water that children swallow in the sea and pools can cause diarrhea.

Prevention of water loss is important in the treatment of diarrhea.

Stating that it is important to prevent water loss in the treatment of diarrhea, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit stated that children with diarrhea should be given liquid water, ayran and freshly squeezed fruit juice. Zeynep Cerit, who said that children with diarrhea should be given plenty of breast milk during this period, stated that bananas, peaches, lean pasta from solid foods, rice pilaf and boiled potatoes should be consumed during the disease. Stating that foods such as ready-made fruit juices, sugar and chocolate are among the foods that should not be consumed during diarrhea, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Cerit stated that there are many precautions to be taken against diarrhea in the summer months.
Hygiene is the way to prevent diarrhea

Providing information about the measures to be taken against diarrhea in the summer, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit stated that since polluted sea and pool waters can cause diarrhea, attention should be paid to the hygiene and cleanliness of holiday resorts. Stating that hand cleaning is very important, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit stated that packaged products should be consumed and attention should be paid to the foods served in open buffets. Stating that the water in which drinking water and food is washed should be clean, Assist. Associate Professor. Zeynep Cerit stated that beverages should be consumed without ice, due to the possibility that the water in which ice is made in iced drinks is not clean.

Nosebleeds may become more frequent

Reminding that nosebleeds and wounds caused by insect bites on the skin are summer problems seen in children, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit reminded that the heads of children with nosebleeds should not be thrown backwards and stated that the head of the children with bleeding nose should be tilted forward and the nasal root should be pressed. Stating that in case of rash, it is necessary to take a bath with warm water every day and wear thin cotton clothes, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Cerit reminded that fly and insect bites are common in summer. Stating that the use of fly and insecticides containing chemicals in indoor environments harms children, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit said that for this reason, natural preservatives or mosquito nets should be used instead of chemicals applied inside the room or on the body, especially to protect babies from flies.

Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit: “Prefer the sea instead of the pool.”

Stating that it would be healthier to prefer the sea instead of the pool, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit said that pools are more favorable environments for bacteria and viruses to live, so skin, ear infections, hapatitis A and eye diseases can often be the cause. Stating that it is possible to reduce the risk of such infections by choosing the sea instead of the pool, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Cerit warned that if the pool is preferred, it is necessary not to walk around the pool with bare feet, to put earplugs and to take a shower before and after the pool.
