Even if visual acuity is not affected much in the early stages due to compression on the visual nerve, serious losses and narrowing in the visual field occur. Losses are irreversible. It is an insidious disease as it can progress without affecting visual clarity until the last stages. Unless it rises to very high values (which is slow progressive in most patients), it is not noticed by the patient. It does not cause any pain or symptoms in the eye.
It is understood after a detailed eye examination
In cases where a normal eye examination is performed, it is not detected during the glasses examination. In hospitals where intensive outpatient services are provided, it is very difficult to perform eye pressure and fundus examination of the back of the eye one by one for each patient. In such cases of intensive patient presence, it can be easily bypassed. For this reason, we especially recommend that our patients have an eye examination for eye pressure screening even if they do not have any problems. The risk increases in individuals with eye pressure in their family. These patients should have more frequent check-ups.
Who has eye pressure?
There is no certain age limit for eye pressure disease. It may be congenital as well as in early childhood. However, it is more frequently seen over the age of 40. For this reason, it is beneficial for every person over the age of 40 to have a screening examination in terms of eye pressure once a year in the worst case, even if there is no history of eye pressure in the family.
Eye pressure can vary within hours, just like arm pressure. Even if eye pressure measurements are normal in some of our patients, the current blood pressure may be in a situation that can damage the visual nerve. Particular attention should be paid to these so-called 'normotensive glaucoma' conditions.
How is eye pressure detected?
We make use of various tests in the detection and follow-up of our eye pressure patients. Tests such as visual field, retinal nerve fiber analysis and OCT help us understand the extent of glaucoma disease.
Eye pressure is an insidious disease. It can be easily overlooked, especially if not looked at. When diagnosed late, it may cause blindness. It ranks second among the causes of blindness in the world. With early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, which is a preventable cause of blindness, vision can be preserved for long turns.
How is eye pressure (glaucoma) treated?
Eye tension (glaucoma) cannot be completely cured and eliminated after diagnosis; However, in many cases, with appropriate treatment, it can be successfully controlled and the progression of vision loss can be prevented.
Open angle glaucoma is primarily treated with various medications that lower intraocular pressure. Surgical treatments can be applied in resistant cases or according to the glaucoma type. Some patients may require more than one surgical intervention.
In the narrow angle type that occurs with the crisis, the treatment is very urgent. Laser treatments can be used in uncontrolled glaucoma or closed angle glaucoma.
