Jaime Lerner, a Brazilian architect and urban planner who helped develop the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which is known as the 'father of Metrobus' in Turkey and changed the face of public transportation in cities around the world, passed away.
Mackenzie Evangelical University Hospital said Lerner died of chronic kidney disease. Lerner, who died at the age of 83, first came to the fore when he was elected mayor of his hometown of Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil, in the 1970s.
Under Lerner's administration, Curitiba launched the Integrated Transport Network, which will become a model for cities around the world. This system developed by Lerner's has been applied in more than 250 cities including Bogota, Brisbane, Johannesburg and Marrakech. This system, developed by Lerner's, also forms the basis of Metrobus in Istanbul.

Jaime Lerner served as municipal leader for three periods (1971-1974, 1979-1983 and 1989-1992) and as governor of Parana state for two periods.
Lerner was named one of the 2010 most influential individuals in the world by Time magazine in 100.
The famous architect wrote many books on urban planning.
