Complaints such as the person's inability to stay without cleaning, inner distress when not cleaning, malaise, and not being able to take pleasure from anything may be signs of cleaning addiction. The experts, stating that the person only feels good when cleaning, and this situation has become a cycle like smoking or alcohol addiction, note that cleaning addiction occurs in young ages, especially in adolescence. According to experts, families should take children's and young people's obsession with cleanliness seriously.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz made evaluations about the increasing addiction to cleaning today.

Noting that the addiction to cleaning is increasing today, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “Today addictions are actually increasing. This situation may be related to many reasons such as changing living conditions and changing psychological conditions of people. " said.

She only feels good when she cleans

Stating that cleaning addiction is not different from other addictions such as alcohol or cigarettes, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz says, “Addiction to cleaning, the inability of a person to do without cleaning, to have complaints such as inner distress, malaise, not being able to take pleasure from anything when he / she does not clean. It is the state of feeling good and taking pleasure only when a person cleans. This cycle gradually increases in cleaning addiction and becomes infiltrating all areas of life. Because everywhere you go, there will be an inner distress and a desire to clean. This situation gives a person a pleasure just like smoking and drinking alcohol. After this pleasure, there is a need to wait for a short time and clean again. This is no different from alcohol addiction or other addictions. Because in other addictions, when the desired is not taken, a process in the form of an inner distress, a tension, allocating money to buy, if necessary, leaving his social life, family, job, that is, almost sacrificing himself, emerges. he spoke.

Addiction cycle also occurs in cleaning addiction

Stating that the cycle that occurs in other addictions is also experienced in cleaning addiction, Prof. Dr. Stating that addiction is a brain disease, Gül Eryılmaz said:

“After taking the substance, there is a cycle of taking pleasure for a short time, a waiting period after a short time of pleasure, and the need to take the substance again and the pleasure taken from it. In short, this can be called the addiction cycle. In addiction, the person has an excuse to take drugs or to take drugs. Addiction is a brain disease. Just as the thyroid is a disease of the thyroid gland; addiction is also a brain disease. Therefore, if the person makes a promise, swears, and says it will not happen again, if the triode is not good, it will not be good for addiction. No matter how motivated the person is, this cycle repeats when they do not know how to treat this brain disease or see that it is a brain disease. The person turns to the beginning again by using something as an excuse, and the cycle starts over. Cleaning addiction is no different from this. "

Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz stated that many different types of addiction emerged today, and listed them as exercise addiction, food addiction, game addiction, relationship addiction, and partner addiction.

Pleasure and pleasure are mixed in cleaning addiction

Noting that in cleaning addiction, as in other addictions, the brain is constantly busy with cleaning. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “When a cleaning request comes, there is a short-term relief just like alcohol or drug intake, and then the same cycle continues. Especially in cleaning addiction, the brain confuses pleasure with pleasure. Pleasure is short-lived, good for the brain, a click above pleasure, but short-lived. Long-term medium-term does not do well. Pleasure, on the other hand, is a state that is much better and permanent, lasts for a long time, causes positive secretion of some chemicals in the brain, but addiction is not enjoyed, it is enjoyed. It is the same with cleaning addiction. " said.

It occurs at a young age

Stating that cleaning addiction usually occurs at a young age, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “Recent studies show that it has emerged since adolescence. When we look at the frequency, we can say a rate of 1-4%. When we look in terms of psychiatric diseases, it covers a very important group. " said.

Cleaning addiction negatively affects the person's life

Stating that the pandemic period we are in poses adverse conditions, especially for cleaning addiction, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “First of all, we are in a period of psychological unwellness for this addiction. Cleaning addiction can occur after the loss of a loved one, sexual trauma, and an intense stressful period. Cleansing starts very slowly at first, but gradually the brain is so relaxed from the pleasure received, it loves so much that it starts to increase this amount. It increases so much that the person can no longer leave the house. One of my patients was waking up at 8 am to go to work at 3 am. He was cleaning the refrigerator first and then going to work. Even if he went to work, he could not get efficiency from work. Therefore, it is a situation that affects human life considerably. " he spoke.

It is a family illness

Stating that cleaning addiction concerns not only that person, but also his family and immediate surroundings, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “If you are a parent, your communication with the children is affected, your communication with your spouse is affected. On the one hand, if you look at it, it is actually a family disease. Like all addictions, cleaning addiction can start in one person first, almost like radiation, but it affects the whole family. Family, especially adolescents and spousal relationships, also get sick in this sense and sometimes do not know what to do. At first, they made some help in good intentions, but after a while, anger begins like 'This does not understand, does not will, he does it on purpose, he does not choose us, he prefers it' and after a while the person starts to become lonely. Families are also starting to get lonely. " he spoke.

Cleaning addiction is learned from parents

Stating that cleaning addiction mostly occurs in youth, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “What kind of a relationship does childhood have especially for these addictions? Childhood traumas or childhood learning can be effective. If there is something that your mother or father attributes to excessive cleanliness, you also value cleanliness. Because children unconsciously learn these behaviors from the subconscious. After a while, children learn that it is important to be clean, that being healthy is healthy and that being dirty is unhealthy. So they buy models. Of course, genetic predisposition also becomes an important factor. " said.

The period of intense competition can also be effective.

Noting that the age we are in is also effective in the onset of cleaning addiction, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “We are in a period of intense competition and a success-oriented learning model. Therefore, we can talk about adolescent bullying. There is even child bullying, not adolescents. Because if you go to the parks where three or four-year-olds go and make a remote observation, you can see that the children are really bad at each other. In other words, they are very traumatized in these conditions. Cleaning is much better for people. Because, on the one hand, there is also a psychogenic side to cleaning, believing that it clears everything that comes from cleansing the brain. There is also such a perception of the mind towards cleanliness. Therefore, it also sees it as a cure, but everything has a dose. Also, generally in cultures like ours, cleaning is a favorite thing. It comes from faith and it is a precious thing, but again there is a situation related to the dose. When teenagers' obsession with cleanliness begins, parents initially like it. It is rewarded for being neat and clean. This behavior in the person is thus reinforced more. However, in such cases, the responsibility of the parents is to follow this situation. If it is increasing, it must be said that they have a duty to have information about this subject, to get enlightened and to get help if necessary. " warned.

Don't try to impose people

Drawing attention to the fact that the concept of cleaning in cleaning addiction is "a cleaning miscoded by the mind", Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “Because this cleaning is not a cleaning done in a certain time. It has nothing to do with reality. It is a kind of fantasy reality. The brain just doesn't accept it and starts washing it over and over and gets pleasure from it too. So it is no different from an addiction. Alcohol addicts also know this is abnormal, but they drink it over and over. There is no use in persuading the person in cleaning addiction, either. The person must be treated. " said.

Addiction treatment has three important pillars

Noting that there is a triple trivet in addiction treatment, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, “The first step is to evaluate the disease well biologically. Because if we can detect some networks and chemicals in the brain well, it is necessary to do the specific treatment well. The second leg needs a good psychotherapy. The family also needs a good psychotherapy. Because how the family behaves, what to do or what not to do has as much value as medicine. On the third foot, we are talking about the treatment that spreads over several years, starting from the period when the person is partially well, following the periods when he is well and much better. " said.

Take care of the child's cleaning addiction

Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz also listed her advice to families as follows: “Families should definitely get help, pay attention to this issue or read about it when there is a situation related to cleaning, especially in adolescents. Because when an addiction is ignored, it opens the door for other addictions. Both anxiety and obsession can open the door to other addictions. So it is useful to be careful. " said.
