The world record was broken in the N Kolay 16th Istanbul Half Marathon organized by the IMM affiliate SPOR ISTANBUL. Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich, who came to Istanbul with the title of world champion, broke the world record with a time of 1.04.02. Kibiwott Kandie from Kenya took the first place with a time of 59 minutes and 35 seconds.

Organized by SPOR ISTANBUL, an affiliate of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon was held in the Historic Peninsula. This year, 4 thousand runners took part in the race, which was shown in the Elite Label category by World Athletics, due to pandemic measures. The start of the race, which is the only half marathon in Europe in the spring, was IMM General Secretary Can Akın Çağlar, SPOR İSTANBUL General Manager İ. Renay Onur, Turkey Athletics Federation President Fatih Çintımar, Aktif Bank General Manager Aysegul Island, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Director Ilker Ozturk, Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports Deputy Director was given Goksun by Self.

WITH HISTORY

In his speech at the starting point, IMM Secretary General Can Akın Çağlar wished success to all athletes and said, “Today, we are in one of the 8 important half marathons of the world in a race that is intertwined with history. I think this place is different from the others because it is a track where you can enjoy the Historic Peninsula. I would like to thank all competitors for their contribution to Istanbul's brand value ”.

The athletes, who started the race from the Yenikapı Activity Area, followed the coastal road to Galata Bridge and then made a 'U' turn from the lights at the end of the bridge and proceeded to Fatih. The track, which continued in the opposite direction with the 'U' turn before coming to the Golden Horn Bridge, ended at the point it started in Yenikapı.

WORLD RECORD BREAKED

The world record was broken for women in the race, where all efficiency measures were taken regarding the pandemic. Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich, who finished the Istanbul Half Marathon in 64 minutes, whose last meters were in excitement, broke the world record with this degree. Chepngetich, who had championships in Istanbul before, was followed by Ethiopian Yalamzere Yehuhlaw with a score of 1.04.40. Helen Obiri from Kenya won the third place with 1.04.51.

KENYA ATHLETES ARE THE FIRST THREE

Kenyan athlete Kibiwott Kandie, world half marathon record holder in men's, finished first in the race. Kandie finished the race with a time of 59.35. Having finished the race with a time of 59.38, Kamworor Geoffrey came second after his citizen. Another Kenyan Ronger Kırkorir came in third with a time of 59.45.
