One more step was taken to include the Historical Port City of Izmir, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List, on the permanent list. The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality UNESCO Izmir History and Port City Communication and Coordination Office, which was restored in the Basmane region, was opened with a ceremony. The opening ceremony was attended by İzmir Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, Konak Mayor Abdül Batur, Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Murat Karaçanta, TARKEM General Manager Sergenc İneler, TARKEM Deputy Chairman Muzaffer Tunçağ, TARKEM Board Member Necip Kalkan, Kemeraltı Semih Girgin, President of the Tradesmen Association, Abdülaziz Ediz, Head of the UNESCO Izmir Historical Area, and Çağrı Gruşçu, CHP Konak District President, also attended the meeting. Governor Köşger and President Soyer received information about the work to be carried out in the office that was opened.

"We will try to get it on the permanent list"

İzmir Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger stated in his statement that it is a very important day for İzmir and said, “İzmir is a city that lives on very rich historical resources. History and current economic dynamism, which is one of Turkey's most prominent cities. As of its historical past, this is a port city. Port cities have different characteristics. Port cities are multicultural, have an open horizon, and look at the world. It has communication with all parts of the world. İzmir has all these characteristics. A city that has these characteristics in all stages of history. "It is a city with a multicultural, multi-layered, historical richness."

Stating that they will create the file in 2023 and work for this area to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage Permanent List, Governor Köşger said, “First of all, this is a living area. The region where the heart of commerce beats. We aim to rehabilitate this place while working and bring it to Izmir. Izmir Governor's Office, Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Konak Municipality, with the support İZKA here will transform into a wealth of Izmir and Turkey. We will make it into the list. We will work for this, ”he said.

"A very good start"

İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer stated that it was a historical and precious moment for the city. Stating that Kemeraltı is at a point that will be the leverage of İzmir, Mayor Tunç Soyer said, “It is the oldest, biggest open air shopping center in the world. When we add this place to the Permanent Heritage List, İzmir's awareness and brand power will grow much more all over the world. I am very proud to be working with our stakeholders. We are also very excited to show the whole world that Izmir has such an important heritage. A very good start. I hope we will bring it to an end in 2023, ”he said.

İzmir Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger and İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer examined the historical buildings in the region after the ceremony.

A team of 10 experts from the Culture and Tourism Directorate, Izmir Governorship, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Konak Municipality and Izmir Development Agency will carry out the work. In the first stage, a "site management plan" will be prepared in the UNESCO office.
