Up-to-date information on the HAVA SOJ Project was presented in the 120th issue of the in-house communication magazine of Turkish Aviation and Space Industry.

The Contract for the Remote Electronic Support / Electronic Attack Project on the Airborne Platform was signed between the SSB and ASELSAN in August 2018 to develop Electronic Warfare Special Mission Aircraft.

An Electronic Warfare System Procurement Contract with a total cost of TL 900 million and $ 430 million was signed between ASELSAN and the Defense Industry Presidency. Within the scope of the contract, 4 AIR SOJ systems to be produced with domestic facilities would be put into service of the Air Force Command as of 2023. All deliveries, including the warranty period, would be completed by 2027.

The key to electronic dominance in the sky: AIR SOJ Project

The HAVA SOJ Project, carried out by the TAI and ASELSAN Joint Venture, was initiated to develop the electronic warfare special mission aircraft needed by the Turkish Armed Forces. Airborne remote electronic support and electronic attack capabilities, we have SOJA AIR Systems, defended Turkey's external dependence is expected to provide a major contribution to reduced the minimum target countries.

The HAVA SOJ Project was created to develop the electronic warfare special mission aircraft needed by our army. With the project carried out by TAI and ASELSAN Joint Venture, in order to meet the needs of the Turkish Air Force Command, AIR SOJ aircraft with remote electronic support and electronic attack capabilities, as well as planning and training centers, hangar and SOJ fleet buildings, spare parts, ground support equipment, training and integrated logistics support services will also be provided.

The Integrated Air SOJ System, to be used by the Turkish Air Force in air attack operations against external threats, allows the enemy to detect, confuse or deceive all kinds of radar and communication facilities without entering the threat zone. The system, which will provide capabilities to implement mission planning, execution, post-mission analysis, aircraft and mission system operation / maintenance / maintenance services, basically consists of two main elements:

Air SOJ System (Mission System integrated air platform)
Planning and Training Center (location / mission support elements)

The main backbone of the project is the procurement of four Air SOJ Systems needed by the Air Force Command. Providing the identification of enemy communication systems and radars, HAVA SOJ also ensures that enemy systems are confused and deceived in order not to be used against friendly elements, especially in cross-border operations. Mission systems to be integrated into the Air SOJ System will be produced using domestic means.

Services within the scope of the project, the Air SOJ System, which provides interoperability status of the Mission System and aircraft systems, will perform remote ED / ET missions under safe flight conditions. In the process of converting the Air SOJ Platform to the SOJ System, Group-A structural modification designs (Inner and Outer hull) on the Bombardier Global 6000 type aircraft, the Electrical Power Distribution System (EPDS) design that provides the necessary electrical power to the mission systems, the cooling capacity The design, detail part manufacturing, modification, assembly, system integration and SOJ aircraft certification of the Cooling System (SCS / LCS) will be carried out by TAI. The effects of external shape changes on aircraft on systems such as flight control (FCU), stall prevention and warning (SPC) will be examined. Systems will also be updated according to the results obtained. One of the main outputs of the project will be the delivery of four special mission aircraft converted to the Air SOJ system to the Air Force Command with Military Complementary Type Certificates (STC) and integrated logistics support activities.

How is the process managed?

In SOJ aircraft development, TAI conducts an integrated project management process with its business partner ASELSAN and many foreign subcontractors. TAI integrates designs, systems and components created by all stakeholders on the aircraft in its role as a platform integrator. The process is carried out in accordance with the integrated project schedule within the framework of interfaces and job descriptions.

Systems integrated into aircraft

Mission Systems on Air SOJ aircraft perform detection, identification, identification, classification, direction and positioning tasks for traditional and new generation complex land, air and sea radars for communication broadcasts. Electronic attack systems, which work in integration with electronic support systems, use various scrambling and deception techniques. Air SOJ systems operate outside the radar and weapon ranges of enemy air defense systems. Thus, it fulfills its duty safely.

Air SOJ Systems perform their tasks in coordination with the Planning and Training Center on the ground. Enemy air defense suppresses radar and communication systems, allowing friendly combat aircraft to safely perform their attack duties. Friendly combat aircraft can enter and exit the enemy airspace through the safe corridors created by the Air SOJ aircraft and perform their targeted attack missions.

Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft are used in the project

The Bombardier Global 6000 is a business jet aircraft capable of handling flight times of up to 12 hours in the air. There are at least five special mission aircraft built on Global 6000 aircraft on a global scale. With a service ceiling at an altitude of 51 thousand feet, the Global 6000 is an aircraft that provides sufficient electrical power to mission systems with its double engines and generator systems.

Prospective Benefits in Turkey

Air SOJ is a highly complex project with a high degree of difficulty that can only be carried out by a few companies that have a say in the defense industry in the world. When it is put into service, it will give air superiority to our Air Force Command in our region and in the world. In this respect, Air SOJ systems have a strategic importance for our country.

The capabilities of the system will contribute to our country's goal of pursuing an effective and active foreign policy, as it will add an important deterrent element. This system, which acts as a very effective weapon in wartime, will also be a deterrent for our enemies in times of peace.

Contribution to TAI

Within the scope of transforming a commercial aircraft in the FAR-25 / CS-25 category into a special mission aircraft, aircraft modification design, detail part manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing and verification will gain certification competence for the change application evaluated in the "major" class. With these capabilities and SOJ aircraft, high export potential can be achieved. In this way, the information and technology obtained will be exported and a significant distance will be made in the way of becoming a global aviation and space company that has reached global competitive power.

Project Calendar

The provisional acceptance of Air SOJ Systems, which has been on the agenda for more than 20 years and has been needed by the Air Force Command for a long time, will begin in the second half of 2025. The planes will be fully operational by the end of 2026. The preliminary design work of the project, whose system requirements review (SRR) phase has been completed, continues
