Prof. Dr. Levent Kayrın and Asst. Assoc. Dr. Umut Kökbaş developed and patented a fast and reliable test method for detecting Rh blood incompatibility, which can lead to jaundice, anemia, brain damage, heart failure and even death if untreated.
Rh incompatibility is a risky situation if the mother's blood type is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive. Stating that Rh-positive blood cells belonging to the baby that passed into the mother's blood during pregnancy stimulate the mother's immune system and the mother's body saw these cells as a threat and produced antibodies. Dr. Levent Kayrın said that these antibodies also create a serious danger by breaking down the blood cells of the baby.
For this reason, it is very important to determine whether there is a blood incompatibility between the baby and the mother if the blood type of the mother-to-be is Rh negative and the father is Rh positive. Prof. Dr. Kayrın says that as a precaution in pregnancies with the risk of Rh incompatibility, as Rh determination is a time-consuming and expensive method today, expectant mothers are given a blood incompatibility injection in the 28th week of pregnancy and within 72 hours after birth. The anxiety and stress caused by the risk of blood incompatibility on the mother can also negatively affect pregnancy.

Prof. Dr. Levent Kayrın says that if the blood type of the baby is detected as Rh negative as a result of the test, it indicates that there is no blood incompatibility between the mother and the baby. Prof. Dr. Kayrın stated that in this situation, which does not carry any risk in terms of pregnancy, blood incompatibility injection to the mother, no additional treatment is required and normal follow-up is continued.
