The number of tourists coming to Istanbul decreased by 67.1 percent annually to 334. In January, the most tourists came from the Russian Federation and Iran. The number of domestic and foreign tourists visiting accommodation facilities fell 825 percent. The occupancy rate of the accommodation facility decreased to 57 percent.

IMM Istanbul Planning Agency Istanbul Statistics Office discussed the changes in the tourism sector in January in the March 2021 issue of Istanbul Tourism Bulletin. The changes were reflected in the figures as follows:

334 thousand 825 foreign tourists came

In January 2021, the number of tourists coming to Istanbul decreased by 67.1 percent annually to 334. In the same period, the total number of tourists coming to Turkey 825 thousand, down 71.5 percent year 509'y landed. Rose rose 787'y percent share in Turkey's Istanbul.

Most tourists are from the Russian Federation

The country where the most tourists came to Istanbul was the Russian Federation with 49 thousand 971 people. The Russian Federation was followed by Iran (29 thousand), Germany (20 thousand), France (16 thousand) and Ukraine (16 thousand). The annual decrease in the number of tourists was recorded as 21.3 percent in the Russian Federation and 61.1 percent in Iran.

71.1 percent of tourists landed at Istanbul Airport

332 thousand 454 foreign visitors came by airway and 2 thousand 371 by seaway. 71.1 percent of the tourists went to Istanbul Airport, 28 percent went to Gökçen in the morning.

59.6 percent reduction in length of stay

The number of domestic and foreign tourists visiting accommodation facilities decreased by 57 percent annually to 473 thousand. In January 2020, 60.6 percent of the residents were foreign tourists, while it declined to 50.9 percent in one year. Total overnight stays decreased by 59.6 percent annually.

Occupancy rate in facilities decreased to 20.2 percent

While the average occupancy rate for accommodation facilities in January 2020 was 50,8 percent, it fell to 2021 percent in the same period of 20.2. In January, 11.3 percent of the occupancy of the accommodation facility was foreign and 8.9 percent was domestic visitors.
