The Roof of the Metro Stops in Bursa Turns into a Solar Power Plant

The Metropolitan Municipality, which commissioned different investments to ensure energy efficiency by using renewable energy resources in Bursa, is now transforming the roof of metro stations into a Solar Power Plant. With the project to be applied to a total of 30 stations, 47 percent of the electricity consumed at the stations will be provided by solar energy.

In today's world where climate change has become a global problem, while energy consumption increases due to the continuous increase in the population in the cities, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality is implementing another important project related to the efficient use of energy resources and renewable energy resources. Metropolitan Municipality, which has carried out projects such as electricity generation from methane gas accumulated in Hamitler and İnegöl Solid Waste Storage areas, electricity generation from the flow power of water with tribunes installed on BUSKİ's main transmission lines, Solar Power Plant built on the treatment facilities and water tanks belonging to BUSKI (GES) has now added metro stations in the city to its projects. Within the scope of the project covering the roof and top covers of 30 metro stations, the applications at the Acemler Bursaspor Station and the Organized Industry Stations will be completed, while the remaining stations will soon turn into energy stations.

47 percent of consumption is from the sun

With the aim of ensuring energy consumption from renewable energy sources, a power plant with an annual capacity of approximately 30 megawatts will be built on the roof of 2 Bursaray stations in cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality and TEK Energy in order to use solar energy more effectively. Additional costs such as installation, commissioning, UEDAŞ acceptance, 10-year maintenance-repair, insurance, warranty, system operation fee, project cost, application fees will be paid by the contractor and the system will be completely transferred to Burulaş after 10 years. In accordance with the contract, Burulaş will apply income sharing model from production for 10 years. In this model, a minimum of 16,8 percent savings will be achieved from the cost of the national tariff in electricity generation. Thus, while net savings of 10 million 1 thousand TL in energy costs will be made in 394 years, the 17 million TL facility will be operated by Burulaş for free. In this way, while the gain from the project increased to 18.4 million TL, 30 percent of the internal needs of the stations will be met from solar energy with the electricity to be obtained from the sun at 47 stations. Based on the 10-year period, 45 million kilowatt hours of the energy needs of the stations, which is 21 million kilowatt hours, will be met from the sun, thus saving 17 million TL.

In addition to the metro stations, within the scope of the project, a total of 4.4 megawatts of GES investment will be built on the roof of the Metropolitan new service building and open car park, on the roof of Atatürk Congress and Culture Center and Bursa Science and Technology Center, and 1,8 megawatts on the roof of Muradiye Water Factory.

We take important steps

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş, who climbed to the roof of Bursaspor Station and examined the application on site, said that efficient use of resources is of vital importance in meeting vital needs such as energy, health, transportation and communication. Turkey's one of the reasons Aktas President also stated that the energy deficit, "a very great responsibility incumbent upon our city for full independence in energy. As Bursa, we are taking very important steps in this regard. As Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, we apply different alternatives such as solar energy, hydroelectric and wind power plants to our city and take institutional steps at the point of renewable energy. With the solar power plants we apply in metro stations, we will meet 47 percent of the domestic consumption used in the stations from the sun. Implementation at both stations has been completed. I hope we will complete the work in the remaining stations in a short time, ”he said.
