Rolls-Royce conducted the first tests of 2050 percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on its business jet engine with the goal of playing a leading role in ensuring that its industries reach net zero carbon by 100.

Tests on the Pearl 700, Rolls-Royce's newest business aviation engine under development in Dahlewitz, Germany, took place just weeks after the first successful use of pure SAF in ground tests of the Trent 1000 engine in Derby, UK.

This test once again demonstrates that our existing engines for large business jets can operate with 100 percent SAF as a fully "drop-in" option and lay the groundwork for the certification of the relevant fuel. SAF is currently only approved for blends up to 50 percent with conventional jet fuel and can be used in all existing Rolls-Royce engines.

The SAF used in the tests is produced by Paramount, a specialist in low-carbon fuel, World Energy in California, supplied by Shell Aviation and supplied by SkyNRG. This neat fuel has the potential to reduce net CO2 lifecycle emissions by more than 75 percent compared to conventional jet fuel. In the coming years, CO2 life cycle emissions may even be further reduced.

On the subject, Chief Engineer Dr Joerg Au, Director of Business Aviation and Engineering at Rolls-Royce Germany, said: “Sustainable aviation fuels have the potential to significantly reduce the carbon emissions of our engines. When we combine this potential with the superior performance of our Pearl engine family, it brings us one step closer to our customers' goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions. ”

The high-efficiency Pearl 700 combines the Advance2 engine core, the most efficient core in the business aviation industry, with a brand new low-pressure system, resulting in an 725 percent increase in take-off thrust at 18.250 lbs compared to the BR8. The engine delivers 12 percent better thrust-to-weight ratio and 5 percent higher efficiency while maintaining class-leading low noise and oscillation performance.

The engine combines innovative technologies derived from Rolls-Royce's Advance2 technology test programs with experience gained from the Rolls-Royce BR700, today's leading engine family in business aviation. These include a high-efficiency 51.8-inch disc fan, the market's best value 24: 1 high-pressure compressor with six-disc stage, an ultra-low-oscillation propulsion system, a two-stage shieldless high-pressure turbine, and the industry's most efficient and It includes an advanced four-stage low-pressure turbine of compact construction.
