Neck hernias are known as a common condition in the society. Experts who state that if there is stress, if there is a psychic trauma, spasm occurs in the muscles, this situation also causes neck pain, and draws attention to the necessity of using the neck and spine correctly at normal times. Experts recommend avoiding sudden, uncontrolled, excessive movements that are out of routine, strains that exceed the strength of the person, and long standing and sitting in the same or wrong position.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Brain, Nerve and Spinal Cord Surgeon Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bozbuga shared important information about neck pain and recommendations for neck protection.

Pain in the body is a warning system

Stating that pain is a very comprehensive subject, Prof. Dr. “Pain is essentially a warning system within the homeostatic mechanism of the body that indicates that something is wrong and there is a problem in the body. Therefore, when there are diseases, we go to the doctor thanks to the pain. We are warned that there is a problem. Some examinations and examinations are starting. Hence, pain is something that has many causes. For example, headache can occur for nearly a thousand reasons ”.

Neck hernias are a common condition

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bozbuga said, 'If there is stress, if there is a psychic trauma, there will be spasm in the muscles' and continued his words as follows:

“This situation is the cause of neck pain. If there is a tumor or infection in the spinal cord or spine, it is also a cause of neck pain. Neck hernias are the conditions we see very commonly. Therefore, neck pain may occur as a symptom of many diseases, ranging from simple causes that can be easily resolved, treated and even recovered even when left alone, to extremely severe, serious, and difficult to treat diseases. How the neck pain occurs is also important. Chronic and slowly increasing neck pain and suddenly acute neck pain, the character of the pain, the severity of the pain, intermittent or continuous, and the findings of the physician's examination are the features that guide us in the diagnosis.

Neck hernias have symptoms other than pain

Stating that neck hernias are not uniform, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bozbuga said, “Neck hernias that occur with a single and major trauma may present as severe pain, unilateral arm pain, numbness in the arm, weakness in arm movements, especially when it affects the nerve root. Neck hernias have many symptoms other than pain. Hernias that spread slowly over a very long time due to the deterioration of the structures over time give relatively few symptoms. Sometimes there may be neck pain or stiff neck. There are often long periods of time when there are no symptoms or pain. This situation also refers to a pathological ground. In such patients, much more severe neck hernias can easily occur or the picture may be aggravated in terms of both pain and neurological findings ”.

A healthy spine looks like an S

Expressing that normally the spine is a faint S letter shaped mechanically and functionally appropriate, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bozbuga continued his words as follows:

“We can say that this structure looks like a forward curve in the neck, a backward arc on the back, and a letter S in the form of a forward arc at the waist. This structure is an anatomical and physiological condition necessary for the function of the spine. The neck spine is supported by very strong neck muscles and a flattening occurs in the neck in a situation that causes the neck muscles to spasm. This is not an ailment or symptom in itself, but a symptom. The patient cannot express and notice this situation, but experiences consequences such as neck pain and stiffness. We see a flattening in the neck on examination and imaging. Therefore, neck straightening is a condition that occurs with the development of neck muscles as a result of various diseases ranging from a simple spasm to extremely severe neck hernias, neck tumors and infections.

Brain tumors can cause neck pain

Stating that the brain is an extremely rich organ in terms of functions, Prof. Dr. “When a disease occurs in the brain, a wide variety of clinical symptoms appear in a situation such as a tumor. We cannot think of a symptom that is not a sign of a brain tumor. Therefore, a brain tumor may have a clinical picture that occurs with neck pain, neck flattening and neck stiffness. We can see patients prone to bleeding in clinics. Brain tumor and brain hemorrhage can also cause neck pain. "The problem in a segment of the spine other than the neck can also be reflected and cause neck pain.

Avoid standing in the same and wrong position for a long time.

Underlining the need for physical activity and correct sports, Prof. Dr. “In normal times, it is necessary to use the neck and spine correctly. Sudden, uncontrolled strains that exceed the power of the person, excessive movements that go out of routine, long standing and sitting in the same or wrong position should be avoided. Desk employees and physicians who stay in surgery for a long time can stay in the same position for a long time and experience neck pain. Regular, correct and conscious exercises, physical activities should be done and uncontrolled movements that will strain the neck should be avoided at normal times.
