His life and work

He was born in Istanbul on February 28, 1928, as the son of Ayşe Zehra Hanım and Nazmi Acar Bey of Libyan origin. He had a poor childhood and youth. After graduating from Sultanhahmet Commercial High School, he entered Istanbul Fine Arts Academy sculpture department in 1948 and became a student of Rudolf Belling. Later, he moved to Ali Hadi Bara and Zühtü Müridoğlu's workshop and completed his education with them.

During his student years, he was influenced by Bara's understanding of art and turned to abstract works and became passionately attached to abstract sculpture. After graduating in 1953, he started working freelance and held his first solo exhibition the same year. He produced sculptures using iron, nails, wires and wood.

One of his work with nails won first place at the Paris Biennial in 1961. This first place was a turning point in his life. Because with the award, he won one of the two scholarships allocated to artists. Kuzgun Acar went to France with the scholarship he received. He opened an exhibition at the Paris Museum of Modern Art in 1962, and one of his works and two of his designs were purchased by the museum.

Returning to Istanbul after a year spent in Paris, the artist continued his work non-stop. He made attempts to incorporate the statue as an element of decoration in buildings such as offices and hotels.

In 1962, he won first place with an iron sculpture at the 23rd State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition.

In 1962 and 1963, he held two solo exhibitions at the Havre Museum and Lacloche Gallery in France. In 1966, he exhibited his works at the Rodin Museum, and was also recognized in European art circles.

The artist started to prepare a monument intended to be placed on Marmara Island, but could not complete it. Acar fell from the ladder while working on a wall relief and died on February 4, 1976 at the age of 48, due to a brain hemorrhage. His grave is in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
