Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Turkey with WRI Sustainable Cities and Healthy Cities Partnership - is having a new bike path project in Kartal life. When the work is completed, a bicycle path connection will be provided from Kartal coast to E-5 Highway. Thus, cyclists will have easy access to other means of transport.
Bike aims to become one of the urban transport Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), WRI Turkey and Healthy Cities Partnership (The Partnership for Healthy Cities) is making a new bike path on the Anatolian side of Istanbul with the cooperation. The 1-kilometer bicycle path planned to be built in Kartal will be implemented as the first stage of the bicycle path between the coastal road and the Anatolian Courthouse.
When the "Healthier Istanbul by Bicycle in the COVID-19 Outbreak" project is completed, a 100-kilometer continuous line will have emerged between Turgut Özal Boulevard and the D-5 (E-3,3) Highway. The bicycle path will start from Kartal Beach and connect to Marmaray and then to the Metro line. The presence of many schools near the route was also effective in choosing the route. With the project, students will be able to safely go to their schools on bicycles. The bicycle path is aimed to be completed and put into service in June.
BICYCLE WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE RAIL SYSTEM
Emphasizing that bicycles stood out as an alternative means of transportation especially in the period of COVID-19, IMM Transportation Department Head Utku Cihan said that they will direct Istanbulites to active transportation types such as cycling and walking instead of individual motor vehicles in the post-pandemic normalization process.
Utku Cihan said, “Our basic strategy is to create a bicycle road network that is safe throughout the city and integrated with public transportation systems, especially metro. In this context, we started work to rapidly implement the Istanbul Cycling Master Plan. Our efforts are continuing rapidly to bring the necessary equipment to the city to support bicycle transportation. This project is an important step towards making our cycling route along the coastal line on the Anatolian side into an integrated network with public transportation. During the implementation of the project, we will organize an awareness campaign for bicycle transportation, ”he said.

WRA Director for Turkey, which currently holds the project's technical consultant Dr. Güneş Cansiz, on the other hand, stated that the most important factor when creating a bicycle route is the participation of the public and said, “As a matter of fact, we will design this road in line with our meetings with residents and bicycle groups, taking their demands and needs into consideration. We believe that the bicycle path application and the campaign will make a significant contribution to the popularization of the bicycle as a means of transportation ”.
