As a result of the theme determination studies initiated by the Metropolitan Municipality with the aim of promoting tourism in Bursa and bringing a value to the fore every year, it was unanimously accepted by the Metropolitan Municipality Council that 2021 should be the year of Khans Area and Silk.
Bursa Metropolitan Municipality initiated a study with the participation of the Governorship, Metropolitan Municipality, universities, public institutions, non-governmental organizations and tourism sector representatives to determine a 'theme' in order to highlight a value specific to the year 2021. Many features, from Uludağ to Iznik, from Oylat Hot Springs to the Khans Area and İpek, were evaluated in this regard. The issue was brought to the agenda at the February Ordinary Meeting of the Metropolitan Municipality Council. The report prepared by the Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Commission regarding the proposal for the year 2021 to be the 'Khans Region and the Year of Silk' was read. In the commission report; The Khans Area, which is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the important riches of Bursa, Bursa Silk is also the name of İpek Han and Koza Han, where the trade was intensive for a period, and Evliya Çelebi is also from Bursa. It was emphasized that he referred to as 'the land of silk' It was stated that it would be appropriate for 2021 to be the Khans Region and the Year of Silk in order to transfer these two cultural heritages to young generations, to keep them alive and to attract the attention of local and foreign tourists.

The report of the Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Commission stating that 2021 would be appropriate as the Khans Region and the Year of Silk, was unanimously accepted. Evaluating the work to determine the theme year and the decision taken in the parliament, Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş said, “With the joint motion of the parties in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the year 2021 was declared the year of the 'National Anthem'. However, besides this general issue, we wanted to determine a value unique to Bursa as the theme of 2021. We would like to introduce Bursa in national and international platforms with the activities to be held on the specified subject. As Bursa, we have many different and many features within our structure. Since we have so many features at the same time, we had to own them all little by little. Our aim is to make Bursa a world city by blending the values of Bursa, which shaped history, founded the Ottoman Empire, and is the intersection point of civilizations. In this direction, the Khans Area and İpek are two important values that will really highlight our Bursa around the world. The Khans Area is already on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This year, we will organize events and programs that will highlight the Khans Area and silk even more. I wish the decision to be beneficial ”he said.
