Early life

He graduated from Cairo University with a degree in mathematics and physics. He worked in his father's precious woodworking business for a while before starting his acting career in Egypt. In 1955, Michel changed his name to Omar Sharif and converted to Islam in 1954 to marry Egyptian actress Fatin Hamama.

It is widely reported that Sharif studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, but the academy has confirmed to Al Jazeera that this is not true.
