Chengdu's Tianfu International Airport, the capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, conducted a test of the landings of several passenger planes on Friday, January 22nd. This test is important in that it is a decisive step before the airport is put into service. Tianfu, which will be the largest airport in Southwest China, will also be the second airport in Chengdu.
The new airport will be located approximately 50 kilometers from Chengdu city center and will enter service in 2021. According to Sichuan Airport Group Co., Ltd., the new airport, which has an annual capacity of 90 million passengers and 700 tons of mail and cargo, will have a terminal spanning 1,26 million square meters. On the other hand, the opening of a second airport will make Chengdu a transportation hub connecting China to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia, and will become one of the most important passenger transportation hubs on the Silk Road Economic Belt route.
