The 2-2019 edition of the “Efficiency Survey” conducted by the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) every 2020 years contains striking data regarding the testing industry. According to the study conducted with more than 89 thousand participants from 2 countries, 74 percent of the participants think that the accredited trainings make a significant contribution to their certification achievements. Participants also explain their motivation for certification as an important contribution to business results.
The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) is the world's most respected volunteer organization in software testing and quality. ISTQB® conducts an “Effectiveness Survey” every 2 years to monitor software testing markets and trends. Software Testing and Quality Association of Turkey's major survey conducted in cooperation with the 2019-2020 edition, contains the testing industry today and stunning data relating to the future.
According to the survey, which was completed with the participation of more than 89 thousand professionals from 2 countries, the majority of the participants, like 74 percent, think that accredited trainings make a significant contribution to certification achievements. Both employees and managers state that the most important motivation for accredited trainings is their significant contribution to business results.
In the 2013/2016 survey, as in the results of the ISTQB® Activity Survey conducted in 2019 and 2020, the participants explain that the most important motivation for taking the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) is to improve their testing skills and progress in their careers. Similarly, executives state that the most important factor in asking their employees to obtain the ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) certificate is their career development and positive contribution to the corporate image. These elements are followed by employee incentive, customer demand and the company's policy.
High satisfaction
According to the survey, participants will develop their expertise in the next few years, with more professionally accredited training and certificates. More than half of the participating executives think that 80 percent or more of their employees will earn the ISTQB® CTFL certification. Managers also underline that they prefer their teams to be certified.
Behind this trend there is more motivation for success. 85 percent of respondents think that the ISTQB® CTFL certification will positively affect their future by improving their testing skills and 87 percent by improving their career journey. When compared to the 2016 study, it is noteworthy that there is a slight increase in both rates.
92 percent of respondents are also happy to recommend the ISTQB® Foundation Level (CTFL) certification to their colleagues. This result shows that test professionals are highly satisfied with the CTFL certification.
Most preferred
The preference for accredited training and certification offers critical insight into the new direction of the industry. In the 2019/2020 survey, the ISTQB Agile Tester certificate stands out as the highest rated test by the participants. 65 percent of the participants state that getting the Agile Testers certificate will make a very important contribution to their career.
The answer given by the survey participants to the question “Choose the topics you want ISTQB® to address in the future” is also important. Continuous Testing is the top scoring subject in this year's survey, followed by Cloud Test and Business Intelligence / Big Data Test, respectively.
Among the newest or emerging tests that ISTQB® has issued, the most interesting is the Test Automation Engineering certificate, which 50 percent of the participants stated to be relevant. It is followed by Security Testing Specialist certificate, Agile Technical Testing Specialist certificate, Usability Testing and Mobile Application Testing certificate.
