Ankara State Painting and Sculpture Museum, which hosts the most valuable works of our Turkish art history, is reopening on 28 December 2020, with a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The comprehensive restoration work carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on the historical building and works of the Ankara State Painting and Sculpture Museum, one of the most magnificent buildings of the 1st National Architecture Period, started in December 2019. As a result of the attentive repairs carried out with the contribution of the expert staff of the Ministry and academicians from various universities, the unique beauty of the building, which was built as the Headquarters of the Turkish Hearths between 1927 and 1930 with the project of Architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, was revealed. The original details of the building, where earthquake reinforcement was made, were preserved with traditional restoration techniques.

The institutional identity and technical infrastructure of the museum, which has been hosting the most precious works of Turkish art history in the field of visual arts since 1980, has been restructured in accordance with the understanding of contemporary museology. Detailed information of the artifacts in the museum collection was digitalized and recorded with the comprehensive inventory study. Some of the works whose condition analysis were made were restored and their frames were renewed.

Within the scope of restoration works; The works were protected by a new generation smart warehouse system with advanced technology, fireproof feature. An advanced camera and alarm system was set up to ensure continuous monitoring of museums and artifacts.

Masterpieces With Art Lovers Again

The exhibition of the Ankara State Painting and Sculpture Museum, which is a national treasure preserving the last 150 years of Turkish art history in the field of visual arts, was also renewed. The new exhibition is curated by Prof. Dr. Kıymet Giray did it. Visitors will be able to see closely and enjoy the "Masterpieces" of Turkish painting and sculpture at the Museum, where invaluable 240 works of the leading names of painting, from Osman Hamdi Bey to Şeker Ahmet Paşa, from İbrahim Çallı to Bedri Rahmi Eyüpoğlu will be exhibited. they will have the opportunity to spend time. Curator Prof. Dr. Kıymet Giray included the history of the museum as well as the stories of the works in the book titled “Masterpieces”, which he wrote and bears the same name as the exhibition.

The Magnificent Concert Hall will be reached

The museum will be the indispensable address of national and international art events with its renewed structure and cultural heritage.

The museum is planned to be used effectively and actively as a true culture and arts center, with a management style in line with contemporary museology.

It is aimed to transform the magnificent museum building into an indispensable center of attraction for art lovers with various activities. In this context, art history programs, seminars, artist meetings will be held in the Museum with the aim of increasing the cultural development of Turkish painting and sculpture; Workshops will also be organized to make young people and children love art. The museum, which is a cultural center where the first concert, the first opera show and the first theater play in the Republic period were staged, will host programs that art lovers will follow with curiosity in the magnificent concert hall of 400 people.

A Meaningful Concert in the Capital

Within the scope of the opening program, Atatürk's favorite works will be featured in the concert to commemorate the 101st anniversary of Atatürk's arrival in Ankara in the magnificent concert hall of the Museum.

Among the works that Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk persistently wanted and loved in every program; Kemanî Tatyos Efendi's work in Hicazkâr maqam “Mâni Oluluk Hâlimi Takrîre Hicâbım” and his work “Bülbülüm Altın Cage” from Rumelia, which he loves very much, will be performed. In addition, "Karaşar Zeybeği", loved by Atatürk, will be performed in memory of the "Seğmenler" who welcomed Atatürk 101 years ago.

Timeless Traces

The temporary exhibition "Traces without Time", which was prepared to respect the artists within the framework of the revision of the Ankara State Painting and Sculpture Museum, will be presented to the art lovers. The exhibition, which includes the history of the iconic building that shapes the silhouette of the city in the heart of Ankara, the story of its transformation into a museum, and information about the artists and statesmen who have contributed to our art history, can be visited until December 2021.

All art lovers and artists will be able to find a piece of themselves in the "Traces Without Time" exhibition, which can also be considered as a reflection of our recent history specific to the museum building.

A Symbol Building in Ankara: Turkish Hearths Headquarters

One of the most magnificent buildings of the 1st National Architecture Period, the Ankara State Painting and Sculpture Museum building was built between 1927-1930 as the "Turkish Hearths Headquarters". In the competition opened in 1926, the project of architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, who built the Ethnography Museum on Namazgâh Hill with the instructions of Atatürk, came first and the construction of the building started. Thus, the silhouette of Tepe, which is located in the heart of Ankara, has been shaped.

In 1927, Atatürk's Address to the Youth was read for the first time in this building.

In 1933, the first Turkish Language Congress was held in this building under the presidency of Atatürk.

In 1933, the 10th Anniversary March was performed here for the first time.

The first Turkish Opera "Özsoy" was staged in the magnificent concert hall in 1934.

A "Painting and Sculpture Museum" in the Capital

The building was officially allocated to the Ministry's General Directorate of Fine Arts to be used as a painting and sculpture museum in December 1975. Under the supervision of Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, the architect of the building, which was alive in those years, it was restored to its original and new purpose with the project of Architect Abdurrahman Hancı. It was opened as a museum with a ceremony on April 2, 1980. The museum brought a new color and dynamism to Ankara's culture and art scene with activities such as the Asia-Europe Art Biennial, national-international exhibition organizations, various symposiums, meetings, conferences and concerts.

About the Collection

The museum building, with four valuable paintings from the Ministry of National Education - Osman Hamdi Bey's "Arms Merchant", V. Vereshchagin's "At Timur's Tomb", Zonaro's "Young Girl Portrait", Emel Cimcoz (Korutürk) ' “Turkish Child's Thanksgiving to Atatürk”. These works were recorded as the first pieces of the museum collection.

Today, Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum houses one of the most important collections of Turkish painting art, with 3 thousand 629 works in its inventory.
