F1 Drivers Test New Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA

Alfa Romeo demonstrated the aerodynamic improvements it has performed on the limited edition sports models Giulia GTA and GTAm under real road conditions.

Alfa Romeo Racing – Orlen team pilots, Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi participated in the work on the Balocco Test Track, where the carbon components integrated into the vehicles and the aerodynamic structures of the vehicles were tested. World-renowned pilots gathered data under real road conditions by performing tests at the limits, accompanied by a special video, and worked closely with engineers to optimize aerodynamics and handling.

Alfa Romeo is building on the foundations of the legendary model Giulia Quadrifoglio, and further develops the two sports cars Giulia GTA and GTAm versions with aerodynamic solutions. Working with engineering company Sauber Engineering on the carbon components integrated into both versions and the aerodynamics of the vehicles, Alfa Romeo demonstrated the optimizations made with real road tests.

Returning to F33 tracks after 2019 years with the "Alfa Romeo Racing – Orlen" team in 1, Alfa Romeo included team pilots Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi in the road test processes of two new models. During the work on the famous Balocco Test Track in Italy, where all Alfa Romeo sports cars have been developed and tested since the 1960s, F1 pilots collected data under real road conditions by performing tests at the limits with special videos. In line with the data obtained, the vehicle settings were made by sharing information in the workshop of the historical Alfa Romeo racing department Autodelta. Thus, both pilots had the opportunity to closely examine the developments on the vehicles.

F1 knowledge and experience in the GTA project!

On the historic track, also known as the "Alfa Romeo Track" in Balocco, world champion Räikkönen and young Italian pilot Giovinazzi worked closely with engineers to optimize aerodynamics and handling. To complete the fine tuning of GTA and GTAm, F1 pilots analyzed the changes made to the vehicles and conveyed their impressions on the track. Expressing his views in this context, the young Italian Pilot Antonio Giovinazzi drew attention to new technical solutions such as "carbon fiber body components" and "locked central bolt" applied on prototype wheels, whose final version will resemble style 5 type Alfa Romeo design. Giovinazzi; "It is nice to see the developments and improvements we have made on the vehicle under real road conditions," he said. Some Räikkönen worked together with aerodynamics engineers on the adjustable attachment integrated into the new front bumper and the new manually adjusted rear spoiler. Räikkönen also studied the overall balance achieved by interacting these new components with underbody liners. “I see this entire aerodynamic structure as a perfect blend between daily use and track use,” said Finnish pilot, who was satisfied with the result.

Made for aerodynamics and handling

Working with Sauber Engineering on aerodynamic carbon components for GTA and GTAm, Alfa Romeo; In this context, Sauber produces parts such as the new front bumper, air aspirator, side skirts, GTA spoiler and GTAm air outlet. Aerodynamic performance of Giulia GTAm; Thanks to the manually adjustable front attachment and rear spoiler, it can be adapted to any track or road condition in accordance with the driver's preferences. Aerodynamic research in the wind tunnel is not limited to the attachment and spoilers, it also covers the underbody completely, as was done on the Giulia Quadrifoglio. In addition, a special air aspirator is used for GTA and GTAm, which increases roadholding and thus provides a more stable drive at high speeds. Tests have shown that the aerodynamic configuration with high downforce applied in the Giulia GTAm is twice the downforce of the GTA and 3 times more effective than the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which sets standards in its class.

Inspired by the 1965 model Giulia GTA!

Attracting attention with its racing identity, Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA; Technically and conceptually, it is inspired by the Giulia Sprint GT, which won victories in races around the world, and the 1965 Giulia GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerita), developed by Autodelta. The new Giulia GTA, a derivative of the Giulia Quadrifoglio, is equipped with a further improved version of Alfa Romeo's 540 V2.9 Bi-Turbo engine producing 6 hp. The GTAm version, on the other hand, takes advantage of 2,82 kg weight reduction measures, providing an astonishing power-to-weight ratio of 100 kg / HP.

Sauber Engineering contribution to the racing world!

Sauber Engineering, which uses Alfa Romeo's know-how and experience in carbon design and aerodynamics, provides service with 27 years of experience in motor sports, 1 of which are F50. The plant of the Swiss origin company, which is also located in Switzerland, is shown among the most advanced technology in Europe. This cooperation between Sauber Engineering and Alfa Romeo, which has held the title of "the only F1 company with its own wind tunnel" for many years; It brings many advantages from engineering, rapid prototype production process to component production.
