The Project to Transform Izmir Bus Station into the Main Transfer Center Has Been Determined

The national architectural project competition organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality for the bus terminal has been concluded. The project, which was chosen first among 74 projects, stands out with the amount of green space, public spaces open to the use of the city residents, and the fact that the energy needs will be met from renewable energy sources.

The two-stage national architectural project competition organized by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to transform the bus station in Bornova Işıkkent to the main transfer center has been concluded. In the contest, where 74 projects applied and 8 projects remained in the second phase, the project prepared by the team consisting of Master Architect Nurbin Paker, Master Architect Hüseyin Kahvecioğlu, Master Landscape Architect Damla Turan, Architect Hatice Ersoy, Master Architect Elçin Kara Vatansever, and Civil Engineer Bahadır Özcihan was chosen as the winner.

Environmentally friendly project

The project, which will be implemented on an area of ​​155 thousand 200 square meters, stands out with the amount of green space, a symbolic structure, public spaces open to the use of the city, and the energy needs of the main transfer center will be supplied from renewable energy sources. The terminal structure encircles and conceals the bus movement area, park and waiting areas, and creates spaces open to public use on the outer perimeter. In the project, which aims to establish a rich relationship with the city with its multi-functional content, there is an olive grove in the center of the area. In this way, passengers arriving and departing by bus will be welcomed and farewelled in a large olive garden. This area can also be used as a gathering and temporary shelter area in disaster situations. With energy-efficient design, the use of daylight, natural ventilation, solar control, use of gray water and rain water, solar energy, and the applications of obtaining heat energy from the ground, the energy needs of the main transfer center will be used from renewable energy sources.

In the project, passenger terminal, hotel, hostel, commercial units, cafes, restaurants, buffets, exhibition and show areas, office areas, public service points, maintenance-repair areas, city square, Metro and YHT connections, 850-vehicle parking lot, 250-vehicle bus and There is a minibus car park and urban transportation connections.

At the colloquium to be held in October, all participating projects will be exhibited and an award ceremony will be held.

Commissioned in 1998

Izmir Bus Station, owned by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, was built with a build-operate-transfer model and was put into operation in 1998. The operating protocol made with the bus station operation will expire in 2023. In the same year, the Ankara - Izmir High Speed ​​Train project and metro lines are expected to be completed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. In this process, it is aimed to complete the implementation projects and construction tender processes of the main transfer center.
