National Earth Observation Satellite RASAT Entered Its 9th Year in Orbit

Designed in Turkey, it produced the first national earth observation satellite OBSERVATION entered the age of the 9th in orbit.

RASAT, the first indigenous earth observation satellite of our country, designed and produced by TÜBİTAK Space Technologies Research Institute (TÜBİTAK UZAY), has left its 9th year in orbit. RASAT, which was launched from Russia on August 17, 2011 and can receive images from anywhere in the world without any restrictions, is 93 kg and can tour the world in 98 minutes. Images taken at 7,5 m monochrome (panchromatic) and 15 m multiband positional resolution (pushbroom); It is used in cartography, disaster monitoring, agriculture, environment, urbanism and planning studies. The dimensions of each frame image of RASAT are 30 km x 30 km and up to 960 km long strip images can be taken. With RASAT passing through our country 4 times a day; From the withdrawal of water in the dams to new construction constructions, from big fires to volcano eruptions, from the damages caused by flood disasters to the unique natural landscapes of the earth, many high resolution images are obtained.

Design Life Was 3 Years!

TÜBİTAK UZAY has produced RASAT without consultancy or external support, with the experience gained from BİLSAT, the first optical remote sensing satellite of our country, which was launched by technology transfer method in 2003.

With a design life of three years and successfully operating at an altitude of 700 kilometers, RASAT has successfully completed its 17th year in orbit as of August 2020, 9 and proved that Turkish engineers and technicians can produce a long-lasting satellite in space.

RASAT made 9 rounds in its orbit for 47.943 years, successfully completed 3.202 imaging missions and imaged a total area of 16.813.800 km2.

The First Local Satellite Imagery Portal: GEZGİN

The observation mission planning in line with Turkey received each year to cover all the raw images are downloaded to the ground station located within TUBITAK SPACE. After geometric and radiometric corrections of the raw images are made, the leveled images are transferred to the GEZGİN Portal (www.gezgin.gov.t is) are transferred. Our citizens can access the images for free by logging into the portal with their e-government passwords.

The owner of Satellite Technology Country: Turkey

TÜBİTAK UZAY; With the experience gained from RASAT and Göktürk-2 satellites and its infrastructure, equipment, human resources, it continues its effective, value-added activities and projects for innovative and high-local satellite-space technologies and applications.

It is taking firm steps towards its goal of developing critical space technologies in our country and becoming one of the few countries that can make its own satellite. In this respect, TUBITAK Space pioneer in high-resolution observation satellite İMECE and Turkey's first domestic communications satellite Turksat 6 to take their place in space in the coming years.
