Stating that this project, which still serves as the oldest irrigation of the country, could not be maintained properly in the following years, Erdoğan stated that the Konya Plain Project constituted the backbone of the KOP, the transfer of some of the water pouring from the Göksu Basin to the Mediterranean via the Taurus Mountains. told.
Erdogan explained that they opened the Bağbaşı Dam, where water will be kept in 2012, the Blue Tunnel with a length of 17 kilometers, a tunnel diameter of 4,2 meters and a water flow rate of 36 cubic meters per second in 2015, and after the Blue Tunnel, Urfa tunnels, He said that it is the second longest irrigation tunnel. Erdogan stated that thanks to Bozkır and Avşar dams, which will start holding water at the end of this year, they will have the opportunity to use the water brought from the Taurus Mountains in the most efficient way.
Stating that this project is also aimed at meeting the drinking water needs of the cities, Erdoğan continued as follows:
“The first three parts that we have opened are just a part of many works within the scope of Konya Plain Irrigation. When other parts of the project are completed gradually, our land size that we will bring with water in Konya will reach 11 million decares. We transform the existing classical system irrigation networks into closed systems in order to increase efficiency and save water. Bağbaşı Dam alone has contributed 5 billion liras to our economy in the last 2,5 years. We continue to implement storage, dam, pond, underground irrigation, drinking water and energy projects in our other provinces within the scope of Konya Plain Project, Niğde, Aksaray, Karaman, Kırşehir, Nevşehir, Yozgat and Kırıkkale. In addition to Konya, we aim to irrigate 15,5 million decares of land in other provinces. Together with the energy, the total annual contribution of the production in this region to our country will reach 21 billion lira.
