Rüstem Pasha Mosque, located in the Hasırcılar Bazaar in the Tahtakale district of Istanbul, Fatih district.
History
It was built by Mimar Sinan for Damat Rüstem Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent and also the husband of his daughter Mihrimah Sultan (1561). It is said that the mosque (Konyalı) in the 1562 water estate was finished. However, even though he wrote in the license, Mimar Sinan was still working on locating and preparing the mosque in 1562. Estimation to be completed can be between 1562-1564. The names of the previous masjid in the mosque's place are known as Halil Efendi Masjid or Kenise (Church) Masjid. Since the place of this mosque remained in the pit, Mimar Sinan created a sub-basement by making shops under the masjid. Rüstem Pasha Mosque was established in the place of the masjid.
Evliya Çelebi also mentioned the Rüstem Pasha mosque.
Architectural
The mosque can be reached by stairs on both sides. The plan is rectangular, with the central dome arches sit on four elephant feet and columns. The last congregation place has six columns and five domes. Arches, columns and a wooden fringed and fringed part were added to the front. Rüstem Pasha Mosque is covered with tiles all the way up to the dome skirts. Particularly tulip motif tiles are considered one of the most successful examples of Ottoman tile art.
